Zach Duke has been pitching well for the Pirates 3-1 with a 2.78 ERA over his last five starts including out dualing Johan Santana in his last start to earn victory over the Mets. The Atlanta Braves will have Kenshin Kawakami on the mound for the, Kawakami has not allowed more then three earned runs in six starts. I look for these pitchers to be tough again in this contest take the Under.

Randy Johnson takes the hill tonight after winning his 300th game in his last start on Thursday. He is going on three days rest but that should not be an issue as he has tossed only 79 and 78 pitches in his last two starts. He started slow, went on a solid four-game run and then went on a three-game skid. He has now pitched three straight solid games, allowing just two runs in total and covering a combined 17.1 innings. His overall numbers are not very good and that is basically due to three starts where he allowed seven runs in each. Take those out and his ERA drops from 5.12 to 2.42 in his other eight starts so you know the ability is still there. He is 8-1 with a 1.78 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 13 career starts against Florida including a quality start last season. The Marlins counter with Sean West who is coming off his worst of three starts on the season. The Marlins are 0-3 in those three games including 0-2 at home where West has posted a 5.79 ERA and 1.61 WHIP. Florida has averaged only 3.3 rpg in his outings so that certainly is not helping matters. The Giants have won eight of the last 11 meetings in Florida and they avoid the split with another victory on Monday. 3* San Francisco Giants

When betting on games during a double header, keep in mind that managers are usually somewhat happy to get out of the doubleheader with a split. With that in mind, this is the game today the Tigers are going to focus on. White Sox starter Jose Contreras hasn't won a start since June 27th of last season and he is 0-8 with an 8.61 ERA in his last eight outings against the Tigers.

Break up the Oakland A's. All of a sudden, the A's, thought by many to be possible contenders in the AL West prior to the season, are out of their season long funk and red hot. Oakland just completed the sweep over the Orioles and they enter tonight's on a big six-game winning streak. The Twins are really struggling on the road, and they'll have to face another lefty tonight with Josh Outman on the hill for the A's. The Twins are simply not as good vs. lefties and Outman is on a nice roll of late for the A's. Anthony Swarzak is cooling off very quickly after his sparkling big league debut, and I would look for him to have problems tonight as he goes after a team that's finally doing some offensive damage. I'll play the hot hand and will lay the reasonable spot with the soaring A's.

Washingtonwas a strong ‘over’ team early in the year as the lineup was producing and the bullpen was a complete disaster. Although the losing has remained a constant for this team, the Nationals have been playing much different games in recent weeks. Washingtonis batting just .223 in the last ten games and Washingtonhas scored four or fewer runs in eleven of the last 15 games. Despite playing at home, Washingtonhas been held to one or zero runs in four of the past five games.

Cincinnatihas gone cold on offense as well with a .213 team average over the past ten games including significantly worse numbers against right-handed pitching. In seven games in this series last season the ‘under’ was 5-2 and the home team won every game. Washingtonstarter Jordan Zimmermann has a lot of potential and he has allowed just nine hits and four runs over his last two home starts. The Washingtonbullpen amazingly owns a very solid 3.34 ERA over the last ten games as there have been great improvements despite the terrible overall numbers.

Johnny Cueto has allowed four runs just twice this season as he owns eight quality starts. Cueto has averaged over six innings per start and he has allowed just 20 walks in 74 innings while opposing batters are hitting only .204. Cincinnatiowns the fourth lowest bullpen ERA in baseball at 3.32 and the ‘under’ is 6-2 in the last eight Reds games. In the last 17 Nationals games the ‘under’ is 13-4 as Washington’s pitching has shown quiet improvement and both of these teams are struggling to drive in runs.

The A's won for me Monday night, and that gets me right back on them again tonight as they attempt to make it eight straight wins. Scott Baker will look to halt the streak and he's 3-0 lifetime against the A's. But Baker is also 0-3 on the road this season, with a bloated 8.22 ERA. Baker is clearly rounding into good form, so this is no cinch. But in addition to the A's being red hot, they're also in their best role, which is against righties, and the Twins are in the worst, on the road vs. a lefty. The big key here is the price, which offers all kinds of value in that we're getting a team on a big roll at home at even money. Unless it's a really bad pitching matchup, which is not the case here, this is a very solid spot, so I'll call for Oakland to win yet again.

Neither team has been hitting the ball that well recently, but tonight’s pitching match-up leaves a lot to be desired, so both offense will be aided by weak pitching. Harang and Martis have really struggled in their last three outings, as they both have an ERA in the 7’s in their last three outings; four of the last six games these starters have pitched have gone over the posted total. Home plate umpire Angle Hernandez has been a huge over ump in the games that he has called for the Reds, as the over is 15-3-1 in his last 19 games behind the dish.

The Royals have definitely taken a nose-dive since an impressive start, dropping 10 of their last 11, including blowing a 4-0 lead in last night's 8-4 loss at Cleveland. The Indians are just 5-6 since sweeping Tampa Bay at home two weeks ago, as they send Carl Pavano to the hill tonight. Pavano started the season slow, but has bounced back nicely by putting together four straight quality starts. Pavano is coming off a complete-game shutout of the White Sox, allowing just three hits in a 6-0 road victory. The Royals are winless in Gil Meche's last six starts, but the veteran righty has allowed 2 ER or less in five of those outings (including a start in which he lasted 2.1 innings against Detroit). Meche does have seven quality starts against the Indians his last ten trips to the mound, but the Royals have won only three of those games, meaning the Kansas City bullpen has helped cost Meche several victories. I'm not ready to give up on Meche, or jump on the Pavano bandwagon. I see the Indians slightly overvalued here, and I'll take the Royals to capture the win in Cleveland.

Both starters, Gil Meche and Carl Pavano, are pitching better now than their season statistics show.

Meche is over his early-season back problems. In his last two starts, he held the Rays and White Sox to a combined three in 13 innings. He faces an Indians squad that has injuries, lacks a real lead-off hitter and is extremely weak at the bottom of the order.

Pavano has been very good since the beginning of May going 6-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 1.06 ratio. He has a 40-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio during this span while allowing just three home runs in 54 innings. He gets to face a weak Royals lineup here.

The under is 7-2-1 in the Royals' last 10 road games.

Nice solid dog price here for a team that has about a 50/50 shot of winning this one. A lot to ask a pitcher like Bush to win at this type price.

Rockies starter De La Rosa has top notch stuff and carries over a 2-1 ratio of k's to bb's. He has all the tools and can look unhittable at times.

The Rockies have some talent and are starting to play their best ball of the season on the past week, after sweeping the Cards in dominating fashion on the road. They have hit over .300 in the past week while averaging over 7 runs per game and had a 6 game winning streak snapped. They have continued to get respect from the oddsmaker all year and have finally started to show why over the past 7 days.

Live dog in this one. We will take the Rockies.

    Seattle at Baltimore

Two of our favorite handicapping angles show up in the same game today as Seattle takes on Baltimore. Garrett Olson faces his former team for the first time. Pitchers in this situation tend to concentrate better and put in extra preparation in trying to prove something to their former club. We look for Olson who was not successful with Baltimore to make amends here.

Our second handicapping play is to go against a pitcher making his first start since coming off the DL. That's what we find today as Koji Uehara returns from a leg injury.

Offensively the favored Orioles are struggling right now not scoring more than 4 runs in any of their last 10 games. In fact, they have been averaging just 1.7 runs per game over this 10 game stretch.

When looking to play underdogs you look for value and there is simply no way Baltimore deserves to be such a prohibitive favorite here.

Big Erv Santana has struggle in 2009, but I was very encouraged with the way he pitched in his last outing, going 8.1 innings pitched and only allowing one earned run. Santa will build off this performance as the Rays have been taking advantage of sloppy pitching when scoring runs in this series, tonight those opportunities will be limited as Santana will be in control. Santana has been light out on the road, 1-1 with a 1.17 ERA walking four in 15 innings of work. The Rays send their prized pitching prospect to the hill tonight as David Price is maturing into a gem for the Rays. He still has some work to do, as the Angles will show him tonight, look for the bull pens to be a factor where the Angles have the advantage.

There aren't many opportunities where I would feel comfortable backing the Orioles. I did so on Tuesday, as Baltimore beat Seattle, 3-1. And I am doing so tonight, when the O's host the Braves in Interleague play. Jason Berken and Tommy Hanson are both talented rookie pitchers, but Berken has the upper-hand in this one for several reasons. Berken is making his fourth start, as opposed to Hanson's second. Berken is coming off an awful outing at Oakland, in which he lasted 3.1 innings, allowing 9 ER on the road. Hanson was not spectacular by any means, allowing six hits and seven runs in six innings against Milwaukee, but the Braves bailed him out with an 8-7 victory. Atlanta is coming off a disappointing four-game split against a punchless Pittsburgh club, as all four games were decided by one run each, while having their three best pitchers take the mound in that series (Lowe, Vazquez, and Jurrjens). The Braves are 5-12 this season when facing a right-handed starting pitcher after a lefty, while scoring two runs or less in five of their last eight games. This is a good spot to back Baltimore at a short price at home against a pitcher they can definitely get to. I'll take the Orioles to beat the Braves.

Why the Red Sox are favored here is beyond me. Boston is coming off a home sweep of the Yankees and while letdowns in baseball are rare, this is the perfect example of when it can happen as following a series against a hated rival can always produce such a performance. Jon Lester is coming off his best game of the season as he carried a perfect game into the seventh inning and he has definitely started to turn things around. However I do not believe he is all the way back just yet especially on the road where his ERA is 6.14 compared to 4.06 at Fenway Park. That last start can be considered a small bandage on a big wound and he now faces a Phillies team that is 15-6 against left-handed starters this season which is tied for the most wins in the league. They are also 12-2 in their last 14 home games against a southpaw hurler. Philadelphia sends Joe Blanton to the hill and he is by no means a top quality starter but he has looked very good of late after a rough stretch that sent his ERA over 7.00 at one point. He has tossed three straight quality outings where he has posted a 1.80 ERA and 1.00 WHIP that has lowered his season ERA to 5.46. That is far from solid but the Phillies are 7-4 in his 11 starts on the season, including a 6-2 record over his last eight starts, so they are finding ways to win. He has had a very solid career against Boston with a 3.75 ERA in eight starts. The Phillies are 9-1 in Blanton’s last 10 starts against a team with a winning record. 7* Philadelphia Phillies

Both these starters went seven innings in their last two starts and both starters allowed one run in each of their last two starts. This is an interesting coincidence, but there is a major difference. In Haren’s last two starts, his bullpen allowed FIVE runs in each of them. In Hampton’s last two starts, his bullpen did not allow a run. This line seems a bit inflated.

The Astros are off two 2-1 walk-off wins. Don’t expect a “let-down” here. Houston is 6-1 their last seven as a dog after a win in which they scored three or fewer runs. In addition, the league as a whole is 7-3 over the past five seasons as a 170+ dog in the first game of a series when they are off two one-run wins.

The Diamondbacks have no business whatsoever laying this price. Arizona is off a 2-1 win in which the Giants scored a run in the top opf the ninth to break up the shut out. The D-backs are a pathetic 0-11 THIS season when they are off a win by fewer than 12 runs in which they never trailed. Also, the Snakes are a bankroll-burning 5-15 as a home favorite after scoring 3 runs or less and winning. In their last active date in this spot (5/31), Arizona lost 9-3 as a 155 home favorite.

In addition, Arizona is 0-5 THIS season in the first game of a series vs a team that has won at least their last two games.

Dan Haren may be a better starter than Mike Hampton, but the Astros have the edge everywhere else. This price is ridiculous.

Daisuke Matsuzaka hasn't been sharp since coming off the DL with an ERA of 5.66 and a ratio of 1.84. Dice-K has yet to reach the seventh inning this season and the Red Sox bullpen has serious fatigue issues after last night's extra inning game.

The Phillies' bullpen has even more serious fatigue issues with closer Ryan Madson probably unavaliable having worked three straight days.

Phillies rookie Antonio Bastardo is making his third start. He is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA. But he pitched just 11 innings in those starts and they came on the road at Petco Park and Dodger Stadium, two great pitching parks.

Now Bastardo is pitching in a strong hitter's park and stepping way up in class.

Bronson Arroyo has been a frequent thorn in my side, as I haven't always been on target in assessing when he'll be really good or really awful. There's generally no in between with Arroyo, he's a very extreme pitcher. But this does shape up as a good spot for him, and the Royals have the type of power-shy lineup Arroyo usually beats. I have no fears about fading Kyle Davies, and expect the Reds to get their bats rolling in this game. Arroyo and the Reds are road dogs, and they're my side in this hookup.

Colorado goes for their 10th straight win in this game at Coors field. Rockies are 11-4 since Jim Tracy took over as manager. Brandon Morrow makes his first start of the year for Seattle, replacing left-hander Eric Bedard, who has shoulder inflammation. Morrow sports a 6.38 ERA and 1.85 WHIP while pitching out of the bullpen, and a whopping 10.24 ERA on the road, with 14 walks allowed in only 18.1 innings. He will be limited to around 60 pitches.

Jason Marquis takes the mound for the Rockies, and he has pitched well in his last 3 games, going 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA. In his last 5 starts, he has only given up more than 2 runs once. Since 83% of the Rockies wins are by 2 runs or more, we will lay the extra run. Take Colorado Run Line
