    OCTOBER 22, 2005 VOLUME 37, NUMBER 8

    TULSA 45 - Southern Methodist 13 - (3:00 - EDT) -- Line opened at Tulsa minus 14½, and is now minus 15.

No questioning the vast improvement of the 'Canes since the arrival of Kragthorpe in '03.

Just about every casual fan knows the depths to which the 'Canes had descended before

that. Twelve consecutive losing seasons, including a combined 2-21 in '01 & '02. Opening

with losses to Minnesota & Oklahoma only prepared them for the road to come. Since then,

they've gone 4-1, both SU & ATS, covering by an average of 25.3 pts! QB Smith leads the

attack, with RB Parrish the perfect complement. The Mustangs have been a decent play of

late, but they are still a 6-15 spread play on the road, can't run, & with QB Romo off a 4-

interception game. Throw in payback for last year's Pony OT win.

    RATING: TULSA 89

TEXAS 49 - Texas Tech 20 - (3:30) -- Line opened at Texas minus 17, and is now minus 16. A mini Tech line

move here, which is a direct reflection of the Raiders' destruction of KansasSt last week.

That one, however, was simply an extension Tech's spread domination of the Wildcats.

Things get dramatically stickier here, as the 2nd-rated 'Horns seem to improve by the week,

under the leadership of Young, who is in off a 25-of-29 aerial display. Yet to taste defeat,

either SU or ATS, the Steers' overland game isn't up to LY's standard, but it is getting there.

Remember, Texas had a 368 RY edge in LY's rout. Tech is again atop of the passing heap,

but barely escaped at Nebraska. This for all the Big12 South marbles.

    RATING: TEXAS 89

IOWA 33 - Michigan 19 - (12:00) -- Line opened at Iowa minus 1½, and is now minus 3. The best home field

college football? Look no further than Kinnick Stadium, where the Hawkeyes of Iowa have

won 22 straight on the field, while compiling incredible ATS records of 17-1-1 & 25-4-1.

That push came a week ago, vs up-&-coming Indiana, but still a 17-pt straightup win, with a

4.8-1.9 ypr edge. The Wolverines haven't had any breathing room since their home rout of

EasternMich, with their last 4 games being decided by 3 (OT), 3, 3, & 2 pts, including their

heartstopping win over previously unbeaten PennSt a week ago. Sets up perfectly for the

Hawkeyes, who have rarely missed an important chance under Ferentz.

    RATING: IOWA 88

Oregon 38 - ARIZONA 17 - (7:00) -- Line opened at Oregon minus 8, and is now minus 9. The Ducks came

in nicely on this publication a week ago, & no reason to jump ship this week. If you were to

eliminate their game with omnipotent USC, you would find a record of 6-0 SU, & 5-0 ATS,

an average of 40.3 ppg, with yardage outputs of 554, 492, 585, 512, & 570 in lined affairs.

QB Clemens ranks behind only TexasTech's Hodge in PYs (2,219), with 18 TD passes, &

only 3 picks. Take to the road here, but note that the Ducks have covered their first 2

PacTen travellers by 18 & 23½. The Wildcats of Arizona are again searching for answers,

but won't find them here. Had a 492-266 yd deficit vs LY's 5-6 Oregon team.

    RATING: OREGON 88

    TEXAS-EL PASO 44 - Marshall 17 - (9:00) -- Line opened at Utep minus 13, and is now minus 12½. The

turnaround of the Miners of Utep, under the tutelage of Mike Price is somewhat of a mirror

image of what the 'Canes of Tulsa are experiencing. Inheriting a team which had gone 2-9,

    2-10, & 2-11 ('01, '02, '03), Price had the Miners at 8-3 at '04's regular season's end, & into

a bowl game. They lost to Colorado in the Houston Bowl, but gave the Buffs fits, before

going down by only 5 pts. They are averaging 39 ppg in their last 15 outings, while the Herd

of Marshall is among the offensive dregs, with an average of just 16 ppg in their last 6 lined

games. If Utep isn't turnover proned, this should be a comfortable win.

    RATING: TEXAS-EL PASO 88

WASHINGTON 33 - San Francisco 10 - (1:00) -- Line opened at Washington minus 11½, and is now minus

    12. We know that the 12-pt spot in this one is huge, by NFL standards, but what other way

is there? The Niners are among the worst squads in recent history, having allowed at least

20 pts in 23 of their last 24 games, allowing an average of 29.4 ppg in those 2 dozen

contests. Against the line, they are but 16 pts from a 1-18 run. They had last week off, but

that means little, or nothing, as a year ago, they gave up 23 pts to a Bear team which

averaged 9 ppg in its previous 3 games, losing by 7 pts ATS. 'Skins are among the stat

leaders in all columns. Take out frustrations off their 2-game slide. Rout!

    RATING: WASHINGTON 88

NEAR CHOICES (Rated 87): CentralFlorida, Oklahoma, Auburn, NewMex - NFL: Miami, Denver, Atlanta
