NFL PRESEASON BETTING

Do you wager on the NFL exhibition season? There are some people who swear by the preseason and bet each game like it’s the Super Bowl. They feel they have a better edge at this time of year than during the regular season or postseason.

The most often heard remark is that preseason handicapping is almost entirely driven by the immediacy of information.

In this day of Internet postings and other readily available information, the hard-working bettor can garner information and wager on-line before the number gets adjusted.

There are many people who stay away from the preseason for numerous reasons. These bettors can’t stand the erratic play, especially when the game hits the fourth quarter and the scrubs are in. Few things are worse than sweating an entire game and, with 10 minutes to go there are no starters in the game. Your 10-point lead evaporates like ice on asphalt in Las Vegas during mid July.

Another reason to stay away from preseason wagering is that you are betting on too many unknowns. Not just the players, but the motivation of the team in general. During the regular season, you expect each player to give their all. That’s not the case in exhibition games.

Ask yourself why you are wagering in the first place. Is it because you have been looking forward to football so badly that you can’t wait any longer? Or is it to ultimately win money?

There are many people who bet football in general, just for the action. But don’t get yourself into a major hole before the season begins. Legendary gambler Lem Banker is fond of saying that the football season is long, like a marathon. Don’t start out in a sprint.
