UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2008
As many of you know, the Champions League is an All continent competition in which the top teams from the major leagues in Europe compete in a yearlong tournament. Last year's champion, Manchester United of the English Premier League defeated Chelsea, also of the English Premier League on penalty kicks in a great final in Russia.
This year, we are in the group phase of qualifying before we get to a knockout stage.
We'll be playing here and there. I do have 2 for Tuesday Sept. 16'th. They go off at 1.45PM CST on Tuesday. Let's roll.
Play #1:
I'm dipping into the homeland and we're playing on the Werder Bremen game with underdog and cinderella Anorthosis of Cyprus..the first team to make it to the group stage from that Country. Interesting notes in this game..Werder Bremen has lost their last 5 opening games in the group stage in the last 5 Champion Leagues...Anorthosis has never beaten a Bundesligia team in UEFA.(0-6)
Werder has too much firepower for Anorthosis to even think of winning. To paraphrase the writers at soccernet, the only way Anorthosis gets a point is to tie and Bremen will push hard. The line makes us think Werder is going to dominate but that 0-5 record in first round games scores me. In addition, they got the juice so jacked on the under, I think they are trying to clean house. The line is -2 goals -110 on W. Bremen. THAT'S INSANE...Anorthosis knocked off Greek big boy Olympiacos and has looked good in qualifying. I'm going to ride that under.

BIG TIME DOG...Beware, don't play it, but I'm going 1 unit:
I like Sporting Lisbon to realistically give FC Barcelona all they can handle. From what I've read and seen, FC Barcelona is bringing out the artilery. Messi, Henry, and Eto will be playing together for the first time this year. However, we nailed this last year when United wasn't jelling early. Lisbon is no joke and can play bul. I'm tellin ya, this isn't the layup that the linesmakers have put out. The reason it's so high is because Barca has started terribly in LaLiga. This is the Manchester United or Chelsea of La Liga (no disrespect Real Madrid..you just couldn's sign Ronaldo) and their fans are pissed. The offense has scored 1 goal (a PK) and just can't bulge the bag. I won't play the under because I think it could be a draw or low scoring, but I can't pass up this value.

As for the play I recommend and best bet for the reasons above:

BEST BET:
Again a high juice day and I hope it doesn't bite me in the ass. 0-3 and I'm cooked and this is EARLY in the Champions league, so beware, but if I wasn't betting them, I wouldn't post them.
Roll with me on Chelsea under 2 1/2 -135. This team still plays phenomenal defense and the big blue wall is one of the best in futbol. In addition, the home side from France is going to look for a 1-0 lead against one of the world's best keepers in Cech. I'm tellin ya, a half healthy Ballack (his words not mine) drogba is out, Essien is out, it's gonna be 1-0 or maybe an upset in France.

If your looking for straight side plays because you can't hit totals or the goal line (open an account at bookmaker.com) here's some recommendations:
PSV Eindhoven +140 to win over Atl Madrid LOSS
Liverpool +125 over Olympic Marseille WIN (almost made the card, but something's fishy. Gerrard is back and the team is loaded, but it's a good play if you like it.)

I'll post tomorrow's card tonight while I'm watching MLB. Fricken Barcelona and Chelsea magically return to form with game 1 of Champions league.....I wont' make that mistake tomorrow. As in..I won't play against teams that have had poor starts to their league campaigns. Looking back on it, Barcelona NEEDED this game to kick start the season. I should have caught that...GL..back in the PM...I'm really pissed I started in the negative, it's so much easier to build units when you start well. Glad to see some soccer heads in the group. And please feel free to post, I'm much more comfortable in EPL and MLS because it's my safety blanket..I know a lot about those leagues. So Champions League takes a few months to build, but it's a great tourney.

Im with you today PC...
look at this line I have for Febernache tomorrow, the moneyline is +280 but the pK' is +260. Shouldn't there usually be a bigger discrepency between having the pk(draw push) and the ml (draw lose) lines?

your right and that worries me..but I'm still on it. I read it as the game was in France...but with Drogba and Essien out, I'll still play it. Thanks for catching that.

I passed today but I'll post tomorrow's play for Anfield and hopefully a 2nd. But I definetely have a play in the pool game. Will post as I'm watching BP's play cash for us in the college football tilt tonight.
Feel ya MC...I made a mistake in the first matchday. I learned my lesson and hope it's corrected for Wednesday.

Arsenal to win the Champions League:

The Gunnars are decimated by injury, but if they can get through this next round, they should be at full strength. Fabregas, Van persie, and Edabayor are all unfit but should be back from injury if they can get through this next leg. At full strength, I think Arsenal can play with anyone.
Bayern Munchen to win Champions League:
200.00 to win 3200.00 (16/1)
Munchen has a solid, solid, solid team. The ONLY reason they are this low in the odds is last year's performance and the retirement of Ollie and Franz. Jurgen has the team rollin and I fully expect at least a double (German championship and Bundesligia) out of Munchen this year. This is a scary team and no one in the UEFA champions league wants any of Munchen, I can guarantee you that.
manchester United to win Champions league:
300.00 to win 1650.00 (5:1)
United is the best team on the planet. No disrespect to FC Barcelona, but United not favored to win this thing is ridiculous. Did you know that Edwn VanDeSaar and the United defense has 13 clean sheets in a row. (They haven't allowed a goal in 13 games) They did with Evra, Ferdinand, and others injured during this run. United and Barcelona is the logical play for the championship, but I'm going with Munchen and United to revisit an old rivalry we haven't seen in the Champions league in awhile. I just can't throw this away.
