FRESNO ST @ UTAH ST
Hey Guys,
The first 2 weeks have been so-so. Holding my own hitting over 56% but that's unacceptable imo. Here's a game that has caught my early interest. Please feel free to comment and provide any feedback. What have I missed?
Frenso St @ Utah St
I'm very impressed with this Utah St team in 2010. In week 1, they hung with one of the top teams - Okla Sooners. They lost but the numbers were very impressive. Take a look.
1st downs: 21 vs 23
Total yards: 421 vs 422
3rd down efficiency: 7 for 19 (37%)
YPP: 9.2 ypp
In 2009, Utah St lost 27-31 to Fresno St on the road as a 12.5 dog. Let's look a the numbers.
1st downs: 25 vs 20
Total yards: 503 vs 466
Time of possession: 36 mins vs 24 mins
With those numbers they should have won that game last year. Unfortunately, they were outscored 14-0 in the 2h. And, in 2008, they lost @ home 28-30 and were outgained by 12 yds. They seem to match up quite well against Fresno St.
In 2010, they return their Sr. QB Diondre Borel. This kid is 6' and 190 lbs but is one of the fastest running QBs around. He is ranked 3rd in the WAC QB ranking just behind Kellen Moore, Boise St and Colin Kaepernick, Nevada. He is a game breaker and against the Fresno DL should have his way. He is not only a speedster but he can throw hitting 59% of his passes last year. They have tremendous speed at the WR positions with Morrison and newcomer, Eric Moats. I know they lost RB Turbin but Sr. RB Smith is very capable and will the void.
Fresno St is Frenso St. They play the big schools very tough and play marginally in their conference games. I know they bring back their entire OL but the loss of RB Ryan Mathews is key. Their defense has been a sore spot for the past few years. They get torched against good running teams.
KEY STATS>>> Utah St is 8-3 ats L11 HGs & Fresno St is 0-5 ats L5 meetings
Could this be the year that Utah St finally beats Fresno St. Nothing really has changed this year vs last year except that both teams lost their top RBs. I expect QB Borel to run well against this suspect Fresno defense and his ability to scramble should give their speedy WRs time to get open for the big plays. I would give the lean to Utah St to finally win after loosing this meeting the last 3 years.
I see Utah St +6.5. If we wait, we may even get +7 which imo is great value with this live dog.
Play UTAH ST +6.5
Take care,
Rock
FWIW... Sometimes the best dissected and capped games mean nothing if a team isn't mentally prepared to play!
