Washington +3 over BALTIMORE
The Ravens play host to the Redskins in the preseason opener for both teams on Thursday night. Baltimore will be on the field fo! r the first time since their AFC Championship loss at Pittsburgh last January, ending the Ravens fairy tale first season for head coach John Harbaugh.
The Ravens reversed their mark from 5-11 to 11-5, and doing it all with rookie quarterback Joe Flacco, who started all 19 games despite beginning 2008 training camp as the third-stringer.
Now the #1 signal-caller, Flacco is expected to receive only limited minutes on Thursday night before yielding to backups Troy Smith and John Beck, who are battling for primary backup duties. There has been some concern among Ravens fans and the media that covers the team that quarterback Joe Flacco is throwing too many interceptions during training camp.
On the injury front for Baltimore, wide receivers Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams, tight ends Todd Heap and L.J. Smith , pass rushers Trevor Pryce and Terrell Suggs, and offensive lineman Jared Gaither and Marshall Yanda are among the notables who are ! likely to sit out Thursday night.
Washington will come ! into the preseason with a bit more tension following last year's last-place .500% finish.
Quarterback Jason Campbell will re-assume his starting duties, while this season is believed to represent Campbell's final chance to lock down the full-time starting job in Washington, and his fate is very likely tied to that of second-year head coach Jim Zorn. Campbell will be succeeded in the lineup on Thursday by veteran Todd Collins and second-year-pro Colt Brennan, who are competing for the #2 QB position.
One of our NFLX Handicapping Tips is to:
Play ON a team with experienced back-up QBs that have prior experience with the team and will see significant playing time, such as the 2nd half of a game.
This will happen most frequently early in the preseason, especially Week 1. Due to their familiarity with the offensive scheme and speed of NFL defenders, these veteran QBs are much less likely to make critical mistakes. Washington has the edg! e here, as Baltimore will finish the game with John Beck in his Ravens debut and Drew Willy, a rookie from Buffalo - the BULLS, not the Bills.
Harbaugh went 0-2 SU & ATS last year as a home favorite, and he certainly won't be taking this game any more seriously, coming off a playoff season.
We look for this to be a somewhat ugly, close game that the Redskins should be able to pull out with fewer mistakes behind center.
