Game: Cal State Northridge vs. Memphis (12:25 PM Eastern)
Pick: Game Total UNDER 131.5 -110
The Memphis Tigers came within a few points of winning a national championship last year, dropping a heartbreaker in overtime at the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks. That Tigers team saw Joey Dorsey, Chris Douglas Roberts and Derrick Rose all either use up eligibility, or declare for the draft. Those three players combined for 46 of the 68 points scored in the championship game - 67.6%! They also dished out 12 of the team's 14 assists. How in the world are they back again, as a #2 seed and strong candidate for another Final 4? John Calipari doesn't rebuild at Memphis, he reloads. And he has another freshman sensation in Tyreke Evans, who in his first year leads Memphis in scoring. Shawn Taggert and Antonio Anderson emerged as double-digit scorers, and Robert Dozier elevated his game. The result? Memphis hasn't skipped a beat in terms of wins and losses. But, the offense isn't nearly as good. It's about defense as this team defends as good as anyone in the country. How good? They gave up 43 ppg in the three games in the C-USA Championship round. They have allowed an average of 48.5 ppg in their last 12 overall. Last year's team put up 80+ in 19 games. Meanwhile this year in the last 13 games, Memphis has reached 80 just once. CS Northridge at 17-13 is fortunate to be here. They were 6-10 to start the season and finished 11-3 to make their way into the tournament. They have done it with defense, as those 14 games down the stretch saw teams average just 65 ppg against them and no team touched them off for 80+. If Memphis with their superior athleticism and tenacious defense holds them to 50 or less like they have with just about everyone, this total of 130+ would require a lot from the Tigers offense. Memphis would have to go over 80 to push it over, something they have done just once in their last 13 games. And, this is something Northridge hasn't allowed happen in their last 14 games. Too many things have to happen in an unexpected way to push this one OVER the total and my play here is on the UNDER, which has also prevailed in 11 of Memphis' last 12 games.

GL this week$$$$$$
Gentlemen,
I had a hard time sleeping last night knowing that Thursday, the best hoops tournament on the planet starts again. If your interested, I'm in a ton of brackets but my national champion in the high $$$ contests is UNC. All the Heels have to do is get out of this week. Ty Lawson is back, and he's integral to my wager. He's the main reason we are getting better juice on UNC to win the dance. I watched Roy's interview the other day and he knows Ty is rusty. But healthy. We get through to the 16 and he will be a full 10 days back at practice going into Week 2. So, with that in mihd, I layed my hard earned greenbacks on UNC to win the Dance +350 4 units. Not a BPO Sports Corp monitored play, just responding to an email I had. I got the Heels fellas.
Let's talk about Thursday Day #1:
I
Thursday Early games:
West Bracket
Northern Iowa#12 vs. #5 Purdue
2:30 PM EST Tip off
Line: Purdue -8
Let's throw out the obvious 5/12 upset special. Let's look at some numbers first:
**UNI won the Missouri Valley tourney and went 3-0 ATS doing it.
**UNI ripped off 10 straight wins in conference in late December thru January. (9-1 ATS)
**Since Dec. 30'th UNI is an amazing, eye popping 15-6 ATS in lined games.
**The pub is hammering on Purdue at 75%.
Here's what scares me, against the elite, they beat Auburn but Marquette drubbed em by 30, and lowly Iowa State and Iowa both got em. But all those games were early in the year and I'll take my chances. UNI plays slow ball and 8 is a lot for this team. If they can keep it close through the first 25 minutes, they might win outright. They don't play well from behind, but have good guard play, good free throw shooters, good 3 shooters, and a 7 footer inside. Their just damn slow and if Purdue is smart, they will run and press them. But I think UNI can handle it, at least, that's what I'm betting on.

Mid Day:
West Bracket
#10 Maryland vs. #7 Cal
2:55 PM Estimated tip off...
I'm going the dog yet again. Maryland was on fire to finish the season and Gary Williams is one of the best tournament coach's in the country. I won't tell you how Maryland beat the heavyweights of the ACC to secure a birth, but rather about Cal and their fading team.
**Cal is 5-10 ATS in their last 15 games.
**Cal is 2-4 SU in their last 6 games.
I watched some of the Pac 10 tournament and got to watch the Cal/USC game. This team sucks away from home. I mean sucks. I also watched Missouri destroy them 93-66. As well as Maryland is playing defensively (held Duke to 67 in ACC Semi's, held Wake to 64 in a win, in fact no one has scored more than 68 in 10 straight games), I can't see Cal getting it done in this game. Maryland should win outright, but we'll be safe against the buzzer beater.

Prime Time:
East Bracket
American #14 vs #3 Villanova
7:20 PM EST tip off
Line: Villanova -16 1/2 Total 129 1/2
The under is my free play tonight but I'm releasing the side fellas. The Eagles are a solid 13-0 SU in their last 13 games. What really amazed me is the amount of points they allowed. Check this out:
Jan 2 Brown Won 68-53 7-6
Jan 5 Columbia Won 62-50 8-6
Jan 10 Lehigh Won 76-66 9-6 (1-0)
Jan 14 Bucknell Won 69-55 10-6 (2-0)
Jan 17 @Colgate Won 79-49 11-6 (3-0)
Jan 24 @Holy Cross Lost 62-71 11-7 (3-1)
Jan 28 @Navy Won 68-67 12-7 (4-1)
Jan 31 Lafayette Won 78-65 13-7 (5-1)
Feb 4 Army Won 58-34 14-7 (6-1)
Feb 7 @Lehigh Won 66-58 15-7 (7-1)
Feb 11 @Bucknell Won 52-50 16-7 (8-1)
Feb 14 Colgate Won 69-44 17-7 (9-1)
Feb 18 @Army Won 58-36 18-7 (10-1)
Feb 21 Holy Cross Won 56-50 19-7 (11-1)
Feb 25 Navy Won 64-59 20-7 (12-1)
Feb 28 @Lafayette Won 75-68 21-7 (13-1)
Mar 4 Lafayette Won 78-56 22-7 (14-1)
Mar 8 Army Won 61-60 23-7 (15-1)
Mar 13 Holy Cross Won 73-57 24-7 (16-1)
This team flat out plays defense. Holy Cross, an NCAA veteran to the dance, got smoked in the Patriot League final and the Eagles are flying high. (What a terrible pun).
Don't get me wrong, Villanova is a great team and worthy of the 3 seed. What scares me about American is how badly they lost to Georgetown and Oklahoma. But both of those games were early in the year, and with a total of 129 1/2...I think it will be very difficult for Nova to run them out of the gym. They are playing in Philly and that normally is a huge advantage for the Cats, and it will be. But American is in Washington D.C. and Kermit Washington aside, they will be proud to be back in the dance. This team has won 13 games in a row fellas. Big Bad Big East Nova will not intimidate them. I have to ride on the high point dog as I feel I've identified that low seed that has a shot of scaring a final four contender.
3*** on American +16 1/2
Night Cap:
VCU #11 vs UCLA #6
East Bracket
Estimated Tip off 10"ish
Line: UCLA -7 1/2
VCU has been in the dance before and scared tons of teams. I am playing on VCU for a number of reasons. Usually UCLA is a tournament monster, I'm not saying they lose the game, but this is a bad draw for the Bruins. We all have watched UCLA under Howland with that trademark defense in the tournament. They are proving it again this year, but they just don't have the horses we are used to seeing. VCU is an exact replica of the Bruins, they hold offenses low and are very athletic. VCU won't be intimidated because physically, they are the stronger team. They have a higher Defensive FG %, they have better rebounding numbers, and they are playing some great hoops right now. They smoked their conference tourney winning all 3 games by at least 9 points and won the tourney against arch rival George Mason with a solid 21 point drubbing. Again, UCLA is no tournament slouch, but this is a very bad draw. I have to roll on VCU to cover and possibly upset the mighty Bruins.
