Texas AM
Utah (-8.5)
The Big 12 meets the Mountain West in a game featuring two terrific head coaches. Utah's Urban Meyer is recognized as a rising young star while Dennis Franchione has had great success -- just not last year, his first at A&M. Texas A&M was a poor 4-8 overall and 1-11 against the spread. They are not devoid of talent and should bounce back this season. The problem was a terrible defense (52 ppg allowed on the road, where they were 0-5 SU/ATS). Franchione has won whereever he's gone, so the 'D' will likely be much better. The offense will be very good after averaging 25.3 points, an impressive 177 yards rushing and 212 passing per game. Their best offensive players return in junior QB Reggie McNeal and leading rusher sophomore Courtney Lewis (1,024 yards, 5.5 ypc). Francione loves offensive balance and was able to coax it from last year's team, which was the lone plus in a long season. Utah is off a 10-2 season (9-2 ATS) and Meyer likes offensive balance, too. Utah didn't roll over teams, they just played balanced, fundamental football and averaged 160 yards rushing/214 yards passing pg behind junior QB Alex Smith. Both teams should be able to run the football and this shapes up as an evenly matched game. Texas A&M beat Utah 28-26 last season as a 9-point home favorite and this one should also be close. But.. This is NATIONAL TELEVISON here and on ESPN. Utah returns 17 starters. Does AM really have a LEGIT QB? I don’t see it. 8.5 no problem.
The Play: Utah
BC (-17.5)
Ball St.
Ball State has issues against the Big East last season losing 42-21 to Pitt and 53-29 to these BC Eagles. They also played QB Brad Smith and Missouri of the Big 12 and lost 35-7, so stepping up in competition hasn't been fun. Boston College has had very strong offensive balance the last few years under coach Tom O'Brien (182 yards rushing, 222 passing in 2003, with 28.5 ppg). BC has two good quarterbacks returning in senior Paul Peterson (10 TDs, 7 INTs) and Quinton Porter (14 TDs, 6 INTs), though Peterson will start this game. It's the running game that needs a new leader, with RBs Jeff Ross and Mark Palmer hoping to replace workhorse RB Derrick Knight. They should have little trouble scoring points against a Ball State defense that allowed 32 points per game and did even worse when stepping up in class. In fact, Ball State's run defense SUCKS allowing 196 yards rushing per game! Ball State (4-8 SU, 4-7 ATS) has a young rebuilding offense, as well, behind sophomore Joey Lynch and freshman QB Warren Suess. Boston College was an awesome 5-1 SU/ATS on the road a year ago. BC covered as a 21-point favorite over Ball State last fall, 53-29.
The Play: BC
Its BACK!!! Chop Stick pick of Thursday!
Northwestern
TCU (-6.5)
Northwestern (6-7 SU, 9-4 ATS) will be an improved team this year with 17 returning starters including the offensive line which is intact, QB Brett Basanez (4 TDs and 12 ints) and RB Noah Herron who should replace the departed Jason Wright without losing a beat. The defensive line is the most experienced unit and holds opponents under 164 ypg. The secondary needs improvement and therin lies the problem. TCU (LY: 11-2 SU, 4-8 ATS) was cruising along last season with a 10 game winning streak until they dropped a 40-28 clunker to So. Mississippi as a three point favorite and talk about the BCS quickly ended. TCU will be a solid offensive force but with just 5 returning defensive starters look for a lot of points on the scoreboard. TCU has two talented quarterbacks. Tye Gunn (788 yards, 2 TDs, 3 INTs) struggled with injuries and was replaced by Hassell, who threw for 2,039 yards, 10 TDs, 8 INTs, so Brandon Hassell begins the season as No. 1. Leading runners Robert Merrill (1,107 yards) and junior Lonta Hobbs (659 yards, 9 TDs) return, so the running game is in great shape. Hobbs has 21 TDs on the ground the last two seasons. Also, senior WR Reggie Harrell returns and he was terrific in 2003 with 1,012 yards and 58 catches.
TCU got lit up late last year by good passing teams after star safety and team leader Marvin Godbolt went down. He's back, and even if he wasn't, Northwestern can’t pass anyway! TCU wants to show the BS system that they need to be looked at. Take the home team, especially at night on ESPN, particularly when they're this much better

What's up fellas$$$$ Another nice night with my 7 unit play on the Royals (+135) coming in. I told you the Royals don't score much and that they wouldn't need much, but 1-0 was a little closer than I thought! Whew! Overall went 3-3 with a profit of +6.60 units putting me at +13.15 units for the week.
Another good one this afternoon.
Devil Rays (-135) Best Bet
A similar situation to KC and Greinke last night today with TB and Brazelton. The guy loves to pitch at home. Dewon Brazelton is 6-1 at home this year with a 1.60 ERA. He's only let up more than 2 runs once and that was 3 runs to Anaheim. Brazelton's last 3 at home he is 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA, with wins over OAK and ANH and a ND against SEA. Bedard, on the other hand, is 3-4 on the road with a 4.56 ERA. His last 3 on the road he is 0-2 with a 6.32 ERA. I putting another 7 unit play on TB this afternoon.
Devil Rays 6 Orioles 2

Early game pick...
Chicago White Sox + 120 , Oakland (78-54) is 5-7 last 12 Redman (9-10, 4.59) starts, including a 5-2 home loss to the White Sox, Redman allowing five runs over seven innings. Redman is 2-3 life vs. the White Sox. Chicago (65-66) starter Contreras (12-6, 5.04) is 4-1 with a 3.52 era in six starts since being acquired from the Yankees. The Sox have won both Contreras home starts, by a combined 12-4, Contreras allowing three runs on 11 hits over 14 2/3 innings. Contreras is 1-0 life vs. the A's. The teams have split the first two games of this set.
I'm going with the Sox on this one and may have another pick later...

Do not usually play the NFL on the last week BUT tonight the Steelers and Panthers will both play backups for most of the game! This is great news for Steeler backers as the black & gold are just loaded with young players(many whom will be starting very very soon) they will showcase their talent in tonights game. PITT TO THE HOUSE! PITT -3 !!! COLLEGE: NORTHWESTERN +6 wrong team getting points !!! TCU is so last year! GL!! 7-3 preseason! 0-0 CFB!

I've got to agree with PC on this one and here's supporting reasons why...
San Diego Padres + 125 , (at) St. Louis (88-44) is 19-6 last 25 home games. Cardinal's starter Suppan (13-6, 4.02) has allowed 30 runs in 48 1/3 innings over his last eight starts, including 10 runs in 12 1/3 innings over his last two starts. San Diego (71-61) is 17-8 last 25 road games. The Padres have won in Peavy's (11-3, 2.25) last nine starts, five coming on the road, Peavy allowing two runs or less in eight of the nine games, one run or less in four of the nine. Peavy is on pace to become this season's NL e.r.a. champ. St. Louis leads season series 2-0 off winning 4-2 Wednesday.
