MARCH MADDNESS TRENDS

NCAAB

Additional

11 Bracket Picking Rules You Shouldnt Break!

Note: Unless otherwise noted, all stats span from 1985 (the year the tournament expanded to 64 teams) to present.

1st Round:

* Be very selective picking any team below a #12 seed.

#16 seeds are 0 for 88. #15 seeds are 4 for 88. #13 and #14 seeds are less than 19% combined.

* Dont be shy about picking upsets when #12 through #9 seeds are involved

Look especially hard at picking #12 seeds; they have won 11 of 24 matchups vs. #5 seeds the last six years. #9 seeds have a winning record vs. #8 seeds.

2nd Round:

* Advance #1 seeds almost automatically they win their first two games 86% of the time.

* Keep advancing the #12 and #10 seeds you picked to win in Round One.

They win almost half the time in Round Two (14 of 29 for #12 seeds; 17 of 35 for #10 seeds).

* Rarely pick a #13 seed or lower to win in Round Two.

Only 9% of teams advancing past Round Two are seeded that low.

Sweet 16:

* Advance exactly three #1 seeds into the Elite 8

No reason to buck the math: 70% of #1 seeds advance into the 4th round (thats a higher percentage than #5 seeds who win a single game)!

* Advance no team lower than a #12 seed into the Elite 8

NOT ONE has ever advanced!

Elite Eight:

* Advance ONE or TWO #1 seeds to the Final Four.

Amazingly, exactly one or two #1 seeds have made the Final Four 18 of the last 22 years.

* Advance no team lower than a #8 seed to the Final Four.

Only 2 of 88 Final Four teams have been seeded lower than #8.

Final Four:

* Advance NO team below a 6th seed to the Championship game.

Not a single one has made it in the last 21 years.

Championship Game:

* Pick a #4 seed or higher to win it all.

For 18 straight years the champion has been a 4 seed or higher!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5 Team Factors That Matter the Most

#1) Margin of Victory

Statistically speaking, this factor matters twice as much as the second most important factor so ignore at your own risk. Margin of victory is simply the average number of points that a team wins or loses by. Why is this important? Because with only 30 or so games a year, getting lucky in even a handful of close games can make a team look much better record-wise than it truly is. But if a team consistently wins by large margins, you can be more certain youve got a real winner. The key number is 15; teams whose margin of victory is greater than 15 points do exceedingly well in the NCAA Tournament.

#2) Coaching Experience

The Big Dance is an entirely different experience than the regular season, requiring a different approach from the coach. It makes sense that a coach who is new to the Tournament wouldnt know as well how to handle it. The numbers strongly back up this rationale: The average number of tourney appearances for coaches in the tournament is 5.6; the average for teams reaching the Final Four is 9.3 coaching appearances; the average for the team who wins it all is 11.5 coaching appearances (more than double the tournament average). Avoid rookie tourney coaches, and stick with the old lions who have seen it all before.

#3) Team Experience

The Big Dance is not just different for the coaches, its different for the entire organization and having tourney experience is key. This concept extends even beyond the players. Consider all the details that need to be handled, from travel plans, to the type of hotels to stay at, to what equipment the trainer needs to bring. And dont underestimate the intangible of confidence a player walking onto the court knowing that he belongs on the biggest stage. That only comes with experience. The average number of consecutive tourney appearances for teams in the tournament is 3; the average for teams reaching the Final Four is more than double that!

#4) Having a superstar to count on

Since 1979, every NCAA champion except one has had at least one All-American; thats an amazing 27 out of 28 years! The logic makes perfect sense: the tourney is a rollercoaster that requires an on-the-floor leader. On the way to winning six straight games a team will likely face a number of make or break situations, and having the alpha dog on the floor in those spots makes all the difference.

#5) Reliable front court scoring

Centers and Forwards who play near the basket account for front court scoring, and their play is usually a difference maker especially for teams looking to advance deep into the tournament. Relying upon outside shooting is a losing proposition during the Big Dance: first, because the games are played in unfamiliar, spacious arenas, typically with difficult shooting backgrounds. Second, even if great shooters are able to overcome these disadvantages, doing so game after game after game is typically too much to ask. A cold night is bound to happen and it only takes one to be eliminated. Front court scoring, on the other hand, involves lay-ups and slam dunks, shots that are not as affected by surroundings or nerves. Teams who receive at least 60% of their scoring from the front court have historically over-achieved in the NCAA tournament. Stick with such teams, and you will to!

    phantom --

just for your info and anyone else's who read that guys post from pregame.com--

he said pick a 4 seed or higher to win it all-- it happened 18 straight years--not that it matters much--but it is more like 14 years-- 1993 -- 3 # 1 seeds and a # 2-- with the razorbacks taking the national championship--

just figured i'd throw that out there --

Tuesday's List of 13: Digging deeper into March Madness

    13) Kentucky won its last sixteen first round games, going all the way back to '87 first round loss to Ohio State, so no love for Tubby Smith unless he gets to the Sweet 16, and he needs to beat both Villanova, Kansas to do that. Good luck.

After the season I'm going to take longer look at expectations that make certain jobs lot harder than they look. Kentucky is certainly near the top of that list.

    12) Michigan State's Tom Izzo is just 2-3 in the first round last five seasons, but he is golden in second round, winning last second round six games, last four by double digit margins.

    11) Southern Conference teams are 0-9 in last nine NCAA tilts but they covered their last five, with only one loss by nine or more points. Davidson is young team, but has terrific coach in McKillop; they'll give Maryland a good game.

    10) Patriot League teams covered last five first round games; Bucknell won first round games the last two years-- Willard is 3-0 vs spread with Holy Cross, losing by 11,4,4 points.

    9) It has been seven years since the #1 seed in West got to the Final Four; UConn in '99 was last team to do that.

    8) UNLV hasn't won NCAA tournament game since the glory days of Tark the Shark, back in '91.

    7) Virginia assistant coach Rob Lanier worked in Albany for a few years, during his ill-fated term as the head coach at Siena. Two years ago, Lanier lost by 22 to Albany in crosstown tilt; now he meets up with the Great Danes again. Albany will be confident after scaring the hell out of UConn last March.

    6) Memphis meets up with old friend Johnny Jones when the Tigers face North Texas. Jones was Memphis' interim coach, and was candidate for permanent job before John Calipari got hired. Game is in New Orleans; Jones was star player at LSU and is a high school legend in Louisiana.

    5) Winthrop has long trip with not many fans when they face Notre Dame in Spokane, but they will have some fans; wife of Winthrop coach Marshall is from the state of Washington.

    4) Weber State is last team to beat North Carolina in the first round, but Big Sky was weaker than usual this year. Hard to envision Wildcats giving UCLA much of a game.

    3) When Florida won national title last year, they became the first team since Duke in '91 to win national title and go 6-0 vs. the spread in those six games.

    2) No #16 seed has ever beaten a #1, but over last five years, #16's are 12-8 vs spread, so they've been competing.

    1) The #5 seed in Midwest is 4-9 SU last thirteen years, 1-4 in last five. That precarious spot belongs to Butler this season, making Old Dominion the #12 seed most likely to advance.

    Play-in Game

Niagara won last 11 games, doesn't belong in play-in game, but they're here. Eagles are 5-4-1 vs spread in last nine tries as fave; they got off to slow start because Fisher missed eight games at start of season. Florida A&M has six guys from Illinois, so they will have some support in Dayton; Rattlers have three seniors in top nine guys- they played seven rotation teams in Nov/Dec conference schedule and didn't beat any of them, but they did win play-in game three years ago vs Lehigh, 72-57 (+4). Tough part for Florida A&M is that they won title Saturday, got back home Sunday, then flew to Dayton Monday. Niagara won title in MAAC eight days ago, to they're better rested.

    NIT

Investing in NIT games is the ultimate in gambling; no one has a clue how these teams are going to play-- not me, not you, not the coaches of the teams. It is mostly about desire and players really wanting to extend their seasons. None of these teams are happy to be in the NIT, so invest carefully.............

Florida State missed NCAAs mainly because PG Douglas was injured; they played well after he came back. Toledo had won last seven games in row before 56-53 loss to Miami in semis of MAC tourney. Lot of points to give quality Toledo squad.

Utah State beat Nevada twice in a week, but then had to play at New Mexico State is WAC title game; they covered last five as an underdog. Michigan is 5-2 in last seven tries as favorite; not sure how they can be real excited about being in this spot. For Utah State, playing on TV is unusual, at least.

Delaware State won regular season title in MEAC, worst league in country, but they lost in tourney, so they're here, facing the young Mountaineers, who lost in OT to Louisville after coming back from 17-pt deficit in second half. WVa beat Eastern Shore of MEAC 95-49 this season. Delaware State gets 32% of points from arc, so lot of 3's going to be shot here.

Brutal spot for NC State, playing road game after four games in four days in St Petersburg over weekend; this game couldn't have been played Wednesday? Thin Wolfpack beat UNCW of CAA 72-51 in December. Drexel upset over being left out of the field of 65; that could go either way. Some teams get inspired, some go in tank. Has to be tough physically on State, though.

Mississippi State beat Alabama State of SWAC 79-59 back in December; Mississippi Valley won that league. Delta Devils are team that gets to foul line a lot; they rank in top 60 in country in percent of point scored at line. Bulldogs are 2-3 in their last five games, losing twice to Arkansas, which cost them at-large bid; they covered five of last six tries as a favorite.

Alabama has been banged up all season; they got crushed by Kentucky in SEC tourney. If Steele is healthy, they're dynamite but he is always hurt. UMass lost slowish game to Saint Louis in A-14 tourney, ending 0-1 run- they lost to Kentucky by 14 just before Christmas. Bama beat A-14 regular season champ Xavier on neutral court in November, 63-56.

Marist can shoot, pass, but Oklahoma State will kill them inside with physical play of Boggan. Cowboys playing seventh game in 14 days; they're 14-1 outside of Big 12. Marist had won eight in row before losing once again MAAC tourney nemesis Siena this is only fourth game all season Marist is a dog (1-2 vvs pts)

    Niagara vs. Florida A&M

The Rattlers were a surprise to reach the play-in game, knocking off favored Delaware State to win the MEAC Tournament. But they run into a tough opponent in Niagara. The Purple Eagles started the year with six players arrested and suspended for an August fight. The longest suspension went to leading scorer Charron Fisher (21.0 ppg), which helped contribute to Niagara's woeful 1-6 start. But since Fisher's return on Dec. 19, the Purple Eagles are 20-5 and head into the tournament with an 11-game winning streak, including victories over Loyola-MD and Siena to win the MAAC Tournament. Niagara looks like a good pick to cover the Vegas line (-6) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Purple Eagles favored by 12 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Niagara (-6).

    NIT

Investing in NIT games is the ultimate in gambling; no one has a clue how these teams are going to play-- not me, not you, not the coaches of the teams. It is mostly about desire and players really wanting to extend their seasons. None of these teams are happy to be in the NIT, so invest carefully.............

Clemson was 17-0 at one point this season, then lost few close games, and things fell apart; they're 8-4-1 vs spread as favorite vs non-ACC teams (14-0 SU). East Tennessee is 0-5 on road vs non-league clubss, losing by 5 at Tennessee, by 42 at Vandy, by 17 at Eastern Kentucky.

Will Syracuse pout after missing NCAAs, or will they try hard to keep season alive and get to New York? South Alabama lost last four games in Sun Belt, after winning previous 13; they're 5-7 vs spread as favorite vs non-Big East foes. USA lost by 11 at Auburn, 38 at Miss State, 10 vs Ole Miss

Georgia is 2-4 in last six games, getting whacked by Florida in SEC tourney; they're 4-4 vs spread as favorite this year. Fresno State had won five games in row before blowing 37-23 halftime lead in upset loss to Boise in WAC tourney- they're 5-3 vs the spread as an underdog this year. Long trip east for Fresno kids.

Bradley beat Pitt of Big East in NCAAs last year; Braves beat Rutgers 101-72, beat VCU, Wright State, so they're pretty good. Providence beat Boston College, beat GW by 19, Rhode Island by 29, but once they lost by 30 at Florida State, they weren't the same, going 6-9 in last fifteen games.

Hofstra flamed out in first round of CAA; they've had little bit of time to get healthy, now face DePaul squad that was on a 5-1 roll before losing to Villanova in Big East tourney. Hofstra lost by 15 at Syracuse, beat St John's by 12; they split their last six games, are 4-4 vs spread as an underdog this season.

Vermont is going to have trouble scoring at Kansas State team that played well in Big 12 tourney last week. Catamounts are a more disappointed team than K-State, losing at home in finals of America East. Wildcats are so much more athletic than the Catamounts; if they play well, this could be ugly.

Appalachian State has beaten VCU, Virginia, Vanderbilt; they had good season, now visit Ole Miss squad that is 3-4 in last 7 games. ASU is 6-2 vs spread as non-conference underdog this season. Rebels are 5-3 as non-SEC favorite. Ole Miss is 11-3 in non-SEC games. ASU is more disappointed to be here.

Missouri State is used to not hearing their name called for the NCAAs; they host San Diego State team making long trip east after loss in MWC tourney. Aztecs are 3-3 last six games after loss to Colorado State team that fired its coach after tourney. Bears won eight of their last ten games.

Air Force lost its last four games; they're better off playing foe that is unfamiliar with its style, although Samford runs a similar offense; Austin Peay was 3-0 vs Samford this season. Peay has lost six of nine non-league games; they're 0-4-2 vs spread as an underdog in its non-league games

    NCAA First Round

    Thursday, March 15

Davidson is 25-1 in last 26 games; they're second in country in defensive rebounding, so Maryland (7-1 last eight games) has to either run its offense real well, or create easy hoops with its defense. Terps were hot until losing to Miami in ACC tourney; they're 4-2-1 vs spread as non-ACC favorite. Both teams are in top 13 in country in pace, so expect to see fast-paced game. Davidson is 3-1-1 vs spread as an underdog this season.

Texas Tech is 285th in rebound margin, 295th in blocked shots, but they make 41.8% of 3's, and are 6-2 in last eight games- they start three seniors. Boston College is 2-5 in last seven games; their defense hasn't been same since Williams left team Jan 17. Tech won in first round last two years, by 3,12 points; Jarrius Jackson is great player. BC won last three first round games, by 7,12,20 points. Knight vs Boston media might be fun.

Louisville won seven of last eight games, but had long scoring droughts in last two games at Big East tourney. Stanford is big team; they got PG Goods back from injury last week, that helps with scoring in halfcourt sets, but they're 1-4 in last five games with only win vs Arizona State. Louisville will need to get easy baskets in transition; Stanford's height is tough in halfcourt. Louisville lost to Arizona of Pac-10 72-65 back in December.

Oral Roberts won at Kansas this year; they beat USC last year in Alaska, and have two 2,000-point scorers in Green and Tutt. Washington State finished second in Pac-10; they're not flashy but they protect ball well. Green gets to foul line 11 times/game, so both sides well-versed in halfcourt game. ORU has been to foul line 205 more times than its opponents. Wazzu is 11-1 out of Pac-10; they're 3-5 as favorite outside of Pac-10 play.

Old Dominion is 12-1 in last 13 games; they beat Georgetown in December, have deep team. Butler allows just 57 ppg, but they are 3-4 in last seven games, were playing lot better in December Butler gets lot of points from foul line, arc; they're #1 in country in not turning ball over. Monarchs are 11-1 in last dozen games, losing to George Mason in CAA semis. Right now, ODU is the team playing better ball.

Belmont lost 78-44 to UCLA in first round last year; here, they face Georgetown team on roll after winning Big East tourney in style, routing Pitt in final. Bruins take 24 treys/game, hitting on 35.9%. Hoyas are 15-1 in last 16 games (11-4-1 vs spread); they are 3-4 vs spread as non-league favorite. Belmont lost 77-51 at Illinois, 67-58 at Michigan State, 71-60 to St Mary's; they beat Fordham, Rice. Georgetown fashionable Final Four choice.

Its been nine years since Ivy team won NCAA game; Penn lost 60-52 to Texas LY (+14), seventh straight opening round loss, sixth in last eight years (1-6 vs spread). Aggies lost in the first round of Big 12 tourney to Oklahoma State, a red flag; last year, they beat Syracuse 66-58 in first round. A&M is 12-2 outside of Big 12 (5-2 vs spread as favorite). Quakers won last ten games, but vs non-scholarship opposition. Big step up here, vs team that is well-rested and very good.

George Washington forced 61 turnovers in three A-14 tourney games; they beat NC-Wilmington in first round last year, losing to Duke in second round. Vandy is 2-3 in last five games, losing twice to Arkansas; they're 3-4 in last seven games away home, winning at Kentucky, LSU- they split with Tennessee, pressing team like GW. Colonials won last eight games; they lost to USC Air Force, Providence, but beat Va Tech and went 11-6 in SEC.

Duke is 4-7 in last eleven games, losing first ACC tourney game to NC State; they won last ten first round games, but were a #1 seed in eight of those. Last time they were this low a seed, they lost to Eastern Michigan in first round (-3.5). VCU won tourney in CAA; teams from Colonial are 6-0-1 vs spread in last seven first round games. Big edge for VCU in this game at point guard as Duke is 247th in country in turnover percentage. Not good.

Central Connecticut shoots 38% from arc, which is good thing, because they won't get anything inside with Oden. Buckeyes won Big 11 tournament, haven't lost since Jan 9- they covered their last four games. #16 seeds are 12-8 vs spread last five yrs even though a #16 has never beaten a #1. Central Connecticut is well-coached, but they're outmatched here. NEC teams have covered last two years, after being 0-4 vs spread previous four.

McNeal is out for Marquette, which hurts against Michigan St team that is 2-3 in last five first round games, but played really tough schedule in Big 11 this year (three games vs Wisconsin, two vs Ohio State). Marquette is 3-5 in last eight games; they lost to Big 11's Wisconsin 70-66. Spartans are 13-2 out of Big 11 losing to Maryland, BC; they're 2-3 in last five games and have lost eight of last ten games away from East Lansing.

Howland coaches against his alma mater as Bruins start run to second straight Final Four. UCLA slipped to #2 seed, losing its last two games, to Washington, Cal; they're 11-1 outside of the Pac-10, losing only at West Virginia, when Collison didn't play. Big Sky teams are 6-2-1 in last nine first round games; Montana gave league its first NCAA win in seven years last year. UCLA is 7-7 vs spread as double digit favorite this season.

Wright State won 11 of last 12 games, has senior PG; Brownell was 2-0-1 vs spread in last three first round games while he was at NC-Wilmington, with three games decided by total of 9 pts. Both sides play slow-paced games (Wright 288, Pitt 300). Dixon is just 3-3 in NCAA's, winning by 9,4,15 pts; Pitt is 1-3 against spread as a NCAA favorite under Dixon. I have a selection on this game in this box below.

BYU led 16-3 at UNLV in Mountain West final, couldn't hold on to lead, but they're 12-2 last 14 games, losing at San Diego St, UNLV- they led at half at UCLA, but lost by 13. Xavier is 10-4 outside of A-14; they had won nine in row before GW pulled an upset in A-14 semis. BYU doesn't defend 3 well, which could be trouble vs Xavier, which is ranked 16th nationally in offensive efficiency. BYU's RPI is fifteen slots higher than Xavier's.

North Carolina won ACC tourney Sunday, so turnaround time is short for Heels, who should be able to name score vs Eastern Kentucky club that lost 74-45 vs Ohio State, 78-65 to Kentucky and trailed D-III Kenyon by double digits Nov 20, before they finally won by just 11. Carolina likes to run, is so deep, they've had trouble finding enough minutes for everyone. EKU ranks 312th in pace; can they keep game at a snail's pace?

Gonzaga beat Indiana 90-80 in second round LY, but Hoosiers have new coach, Zags are quicker, smaller, winning six of last eight games after Heytfeldt's suspension. Sampson was 5-2 in last seven first round games at Oklahoma, but Hoosiers looked bad in loss to Illinois in Big 11 tourney, their fifth loss in last 9 games. Zags haven't played in 10 days; they've won last four first round games. Gonzaga will want faster pace here

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Thursday, March 15

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Buffalo, New York

Midwest - #4 Maryland vs. #13 Davidson (12:20 PM ET)

The Terrapins are certainly dangerous with all five starters averaging in double-figures. EDGE: MARYLAND

Maryland led the ACC in defending the 3-point shot, which is a huge factor in the NCAA Tournament and could hurt a Davidson team that depends on 3-pointers offensively. EDGE: MARYLAND

The Wildcats are 0-4 ATS in their last four games versus the ACC.

The Terrapins are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games overall.

Midwest - #5 Butler vs. #12 Old Dominion (2:50 PM ET)

No Division I team commits fewer turnovers per game (9.4) than the Bulldogs, who have committed less than 10 turnovers in 13 of their last 18 games. EDGE: BUTLER

The Bulldogs don't have a player taller than 6-foot-7, and they will likely face a size disadvantage in the tournament after getting outrebounded 18 times this season. Meanwhile, Old Dominion outrebounded opponents by an average of four rebounds per game this season, allowing opponents very few opportunities on the offensive glass. EDGE: OLD DOMINION

Butler is 19-0 when holding opponents under 60 points.

Butler’s tournament hinges on the performance of junior guard A.J. Graves. The Bulldogs started the season with a 23-2 record following victories over Notre Dame, Indiana, Tennessee and Gonzaga. In Butler’s last eight games, Graves has made just 15 of 59 (25.4 percent) three-point attempts and the Bulldogs split their last six down the stretch. EDGE: OLD DOMINION

The Monarchs are 0-5 ATS in their last five neutral site games.

The OVER is 6-1 in the Bulldogs' last seven neutral site games as favorites.

West - #6 Duke vs. #11 VCU (7:10 PM ET)

The Blue Devils have a tendency to wear down in the second half because of a lack of dependable depth. EDGE: VCU

VCU can kill opponents with outstanding shooting, hitting over 40 percent from 3-point range and 72.5 percent from the free-throw line. EDGE: VCU

Virginia Commonwealth went 27-6 this season and has a fantastic talent in guard Eric Maynor. The Rams are also coached by Anthony Grant, who just a year ago was an assistant on national champion Florida. EDGE: VCU

The Rams are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six neutral site games.

The Blue Devils are 1-6 ATS in their last seven NCAA Tournament games as favorites.

The OVER is 9-1 in the Rams' last 10 games as underdogs.

West - #3 Pittsburgh vs. #14 Wright State (9:40 PM ET)

Wright State won 11 of its last 12 entering the NCAA tournament, holding opponents to just 56.9 points per game during that stretch 26.1 percent shooting from behind the arc. EDGE: WRIGHT STATE

Eight of Wright State's nine losses were on the road and only two reserves see any significant playing time. EDGE: PITT

Wright State took some time to adjust to new coach Brad Brownell but finished the season winning 12 of its final 13 games, including two over Butler. EDGE: WRIGHT STATE

The Raiders are 16-5-1 ATS in their last 22 games overall.

The UNDER is 20-4-1 in the Raiders' last 25 non-conference games.

The OVER is 19-7 in the Panthers' last 26 non-conference games.

    Lexington, Kentucky

South - #1 Ohio State vs. #16 Central Connecticut State (7:10 PM ET)

Experts believe this is Ohio State’s one shot of winning the national championship with Greg Oden at center before he heads off to the NBA. Oden averaged 17 points and 12.3 rebounds in the Big Ten Tournament. BIG EDGE: OHIO STATE

The Buckeyes are 0-4 ATS in their last four NCAA Tournament games as a favorite.

The UNDER is 17-7 in the Buckeyes last 24 games as a favorite of 13 points or greater.

South - #8 BYU vs. #9 Xavier (9:40 PM ET)

The Musketeers are 21-5 ATS in their last 26 neutral site games.

The Cougars are 0-6 ATS in their last six neutral site games as underdogs.

South - #6 Louisville vs. #11 Stanford (12:40 PM ET)

Louisville head coach Rick Pitino has a .756 winning percentage in the tournament – taking #4 Louisville to the 2005 Final Four and #6 Providence to the 1987 Final Four. EDGE: LOUISVILLE

Stanford is 1-5 ATS in its last six neutral site games as an underdog.

Louisville is 13-3-1 ATS in its last 17 games overall.

    South - #3 Texas A&M vs. #14 Penn (3:10 PM ET)

The Quakers are 0-6 ATS in their last six non-conference games.

The Aggies are 24-10 ATS in their last 34 games overall.

    Winston-Salem, North Carolina

East - #8 Marquette vs. #9 Michigan State (7:20 PM ET)

Michigan State has won seven out of 10 first round appearances with head coach Tom Izzo at the helm. EDGE: MICHIGAN STATE

The Spartans are 10-2-1 ATS in their last 13 NCAA Tournament games favorites.

The Spartans are 0-5 ATS in their last five games versus the Big East.

The OVER is 13-3 in the Golden Eagles' last 16 overall.

East - #1 North Carolina vs. #16 Eastern Kentucky (9:40 PM ET)

The Colonials are 11-1-1 ATS in their last 13 games overall.

The Tar Heels are 9-0 ATS in their last nine non-conference games.

East - #7 Boston College vs. #10 Texas Tech (12:25 PM ET)

Boston College head coach Al Skinner has won at least one game in four of five NCAA appearances at Boston College. EDGE: BOSTON COLLEGE

The Red Raiders are 4-1 ATS in their last five NCAA Tournament games.

The Eagles are 6-1 ATS in their last seven NCAA Tournament games.

East - #2 Georgetown vs. #15 Belmont (3:55 PM ET)

The Hoyas are 15-3-2 ATS in their last 20 games as favorites.

The UNDER is 8-1 in the Hoyas' last nine neutral site games.

    Sacramento, California

West- #2 UCLA vs. #15 Weber State (7:25 PM ET)

UCLA guard Arron Afflalo is regarded as the Pac-10's best clutch player, but the Bruins are comfortable with multiple players having the ball at the end of the game. EDGE: UCLA

The Bruins have no starter taller than 6-foot-8, which was a definite disadvantage against Florida in last year's national championship game. The Bruins are also far from effective at the charity stripe - shooting just 66 percent from the foul line. Weber State is led by 6-10 forward David Patten, who averaged 14.4 points per game as the Big Sky Player of the Year. EDGE: WEBER STATE

For the second straight season, the Bruins don’t have to leave the state. UCLA played in San Diego and then Oakland en route to Indianapolis in 2006. This season, UCLA is slated to play in Sacramento and San Jose as a No. 2 seed. BIG EDGE: UCLA

The Wildcats are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games as an underdog.

The UNDER is 10-3 in the Bruins' last 13 NCAA Tournament games.

West - #7 Indiana vs. #10 Gonzaga (9:55 PM ET)

Indiana doesn't have a player that averages over 15 points per game but certainly is capable from beyond the arc, averaging close to 40 percent from 3-point range on the season. EDGE: INDIANA

Gonzaga guard Derek Raivio led the nation from the free-throw line, hitting 96 percent of his free throws. EDGE: GONZAGA

Indiana lost five of its last nine games, and center D.J. White attempted just 15 shots in 75 minutes of action in the Big Ten Tournament. EDGE: GONZAGA

Indiana head coach Kelvin Sampson is 11-12 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Four of those victories came in a 2002 Final Four run with Oklahoma. His last six tournament teams have been eliminated by a lower seed. EDGE: GONZAGA

The Bulldogs are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 neutral site games as an underdog.

The Hoosiers are 12-4-1 ATS in their last 17 neutral site games as favorites.

East - #6 Vanderbilt vs. #11 George Washington (5:10 PM ET)

The Colonials are 19-7-1 ATS in their last 27 neutral site games.

The Commodores are 1-4 ATS in their last five neutral site games as favorites.

East - #3 Washington State vs. #14 Oral Roberts (7:25 PM ET)

The Golden Eagles are 1-5 ATS in their last six games as an underdog.

The Cougars are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Friday, March 16

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Chicago, Illinois

Midwest - #7 UNLV vs. #10 Georgia Tech (12:25 PM ET)

The Rebels have an assortment of scoring options - so early foul trouble doesn't hinder this team as much as others. Senior point-guard Kevin Kruger led the Mountain West Conference in assists and is the teams most dangerous shooter. EDGE: UNLV

Being away from home is certainly a concern for Georgia Tech, as the Yellow Jackets were a dismal 1-8 in true road games this year, which will still be a factor even on a neutral court. EDGE: UNLV

UNLV advanced to four Final Fours and won the 1990 national title under Jerry Tarkanian but hasn’t wont a single NCAA tournament game since they ran him out after the 1991-92 season. SLIGHT EDGE: GEORGIA TECH

The Yellow Jackets are 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral site games as favorites.

The Rebels are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games underdogs.

The UNDER is 9-1-1 in the Runnin' Rebels' last 11 games as underdogs.

    Midwest - #2 Wisconsin vs. #15 Texas A&M-CC (2:55 PM ET)

With two-year starter Brian Butch out for at least the first two weekends with a dislocated right elbow, Wisconsin is still adjusting. The Badgers are far from automatic on the free-throw line and behind the arc. EDGE: TEXAS A&M-CC

Texas A&M-CC center Chris Daniels averaged 15.3 points and 6.7 rebounds to become the Southland Conference Player of the Year award. He's a 7-footer with an outside touch and opposing teams must design a defense to stop him. EDGE: TEXAS A&M-CC

The Badgers are 0-4 ATS in their last four games after scoring less than 50 points in their previous game.

The UNDER is 5-1 in the Badgers' last six games as favorites of 13 points or greater.

West - #1 Kansas vs. #16 Niagara (7:10 PM ET)

The Kansas Jayhawks certainly look formidable as a No. 1 seed in the West region, but any team can claim as many wins as the Jayhawks in the past two NCAA tournaments. The Jayhawks were bounced by Bucknell and Bradley the last two years. EDGE: NIAGARA

Niagara got a surprise performance from Clif Brown in Tuesday's play-in game, as he connected on a career-high six 3-pointers en route to 32 points in a 77-69 win over Florida A&M. Brown stepped up with 24 points in the second half alone after scoring 18 or less in his previous 11 games while leading scorer Charron Fisher battled foul trouble and totaled just 13 points. EDGE: NIAGARA

West - #8 Kentucky vs. #9 Villanova (9:40 PM ET)

If Villanova leads late in games, it's hard to beat them. The Wildcats shot a Big East-best 78.4 percent from the free-throw line during the regular season. BIG EDGE: VILLANOVA

Kentucky has lost only one first round game with Tubby Smith as head coach – versus Georgia in 1998. EDGE: KENTUCKY

Villanova is 0-4 ATS in its last four NCAA Tournament games.

Kentucky is 8-0-1 ATS in its last nine games versus the Big East.

    Columbus, Ohio

West - #5 Virginia Tech vs. #12 Illinois (7:10 PM ET)

The Hokies have great depth with nine players averaging at least 10 minutes per game, led by senior guards Zabian Dowdell and Jamon Gordon. EDGE: VIRGINIA TECH

Illinois has just nine scholarship players at their disposal and only eight that actually play. The Fighting Illini lack depth and the ability to mix-and-match with versatile opponents

The Fighting Illini are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 neutral site games.

The UNDER is 11-0 in the Fighting Illini's last 11 Friday games.

West - #4 Southern Illinois vs. #13 Holy Cross (9:40 PM ET)

Holy Cross head coach Ralph Willard's coaching style gives the Crusaders a chance to win any game. The Crusaders force 16.9 turnovers per game and knock down free throws, which has led them to 18 of 20 games to capture a fourth Patriot League title in seven years. EDGE: HOLY CROSS

The Patriot League champion (Bucknell) has won first-round games over Kansas and Arkansas each of the last two years. EDGE: HOLY CROSS

The best way to beat Southern Illinois’ man-to-man halfcourt defense is to run against them. However, Holy Cross puts a lot of emphasis on slowing the game down, ranking seventh in the country in team defense with 57.4 points allowed per game. EDGE: UNDER

The Patriot League champion has won first-round games each of the last two years. EDGE: HOLY CROSS

The Crusaders are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games as underdogs.

The Salukis are 2-9-1 ATS in their last 12 games as favorites.

South - #4 Virginia vs. #13 Albany (12:15 PM ET)

Virginia has a great backcourt with guards Sean Singletary and J.R. Reynolds but could have big problems matching up with an opponent with any kind of size. Fortunately for the Cavs in this round, Albany doesn't have much size. EDGE: VIRGINIA

The Great Danes are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.

The Cavaliers are 0-11 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games as a favorite.

South - #5 Tennessee vs. #12 Long Beach State (2:45 PM ET)

Long Beach State coach Larry Reynolds is in a unique situation, as he doesn’t have a contract beyond this season and could be out as head coach. His team won the Big West though and could be a dangerous No. 12 seed. SLIGHT EDGE: LONG BEACH STATE

The 49ers are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games overall.

The Volunteers are 1-7 ATS in their last eight neutral site games as a favorite.

    New Orleans, Louisiana

Midwest - #8 Arizona vs. #9 Purdue (7:20 PM ET)

Arizona thrives in a fast-paced game with three go-to guys in Ivan Radenovic, Marcus Williams and Chase Budinger. The Wildcats also have a very capable point guard in senior Mustafa Shakur. EDGE: ARIZONA

More than most Big Ten teams, the Boilermakers had a huge split between their home and away performances. Purdue went almost three years without a victory on an opponent's court before beating Penn State 69-59 on February 3rd. EDGE: ARIZONA

Arizona seemed to lack interest in the Pac-10 Tournament, but this team has what experts believe to be four future NBA players on its roster. EDGE: ARIZONA

The Boilermakers are 0-4 ATS in their last four games versus the Pac-10.

The Wildcats are 6-0 ATS in their last six NCAA Tournament games.

The OVER is 4-0 in the Wildcats' last four NCAA Tournament games.

Midwest - #1 Florida vs. #16 Jackson State (9:50 PM ET)

With all five starters plus two key reserves back from last year's NCAA championship team, the Gators have plenty of tournament experience. They shoot better than 50 percent from the field overall and 40 percent on threes. EDGE: FLORIDA

The biggest obstacle for Florida is falling behind early or coming out flat, which is definitely a possibility during six possible games in the tournament. The Gators averaged two more turnovers a game more than their 16 SEC opponents. EDGE: JACKSON STATE

Jackson State will go only as far as Trey Johnson wants to take them, as he averages 27.1 points per game - making him the second-leading scorer in the country. EDGE: JACKSON STATE

The Gators are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games as favorites.

The UNDER is 9-2 in the Gators' last 11 NCAA Tournament games as favorites.

South - #2 Memphis vs. #15 North Texas (12:30 PM ET)

Memphis is riding a 22-game winning streak - the longest in the nation - but lacks respect as a member of Conference USA. The Tigers have just three victories against the tourney field (Kentucky, Gonzaga and Jackson State). SLIGHT EDGE: MEMPHIS

The Mean Green Eagles are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 neutral site games.

The Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last five games as favorites of 13 points or greater.

South - #7 Nevada vs. #10 Creighton (3 PM ET)

The Blue Jays are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 games as underdogs.

The OVER is 18-4 in the Wolf Pack's last 22 games as favorites of 0.5-6.5 points.

    Spokane, Washington

Midwest - #6 Notre Dame vs. #11 Winthrop (2:35 PM ET)

The Eagles rely on three seniors - including big man Craig Bradshaw - and two juniors among its top six players. Bradshaw was Winthrop's most dominant plyer down the stretch, averaging 15.1 points and 7.3 rebounds during the conference season. All six have played in at least two NCAA Tournament games. EDGE: WINTHROP

Winthrop has four losses this season: North Carolina, Maryland, Wisconsin and Texas A&M. The only thing holding the Eagles back is head coach Greg Marshall’s 0-6 record in the dance. SLIGHT EDGE: WINTHROP

The Eagles are 7-0 ATS in their last seven neutral site games.

The Fighting Irish are 4-0 ATS in their last four neutral site games.

The OVER is 13-3-1 in the Fighting Irish's last 17 non-conference games.

    Midwest - #3 Oregon vs. #14 Miami-Ohio (5:05 PM ET)

The Ducks are an explosive offensive team with Pac-10 leading scorer Aaron Brooks leading the way. They can score points in bunches, which makes opposing coaches try to slow down the pace. EDGE: OREGON

The RedHawks play a Princeton-style offense, which is something that has been successful in March before. They like to slow down the tempo and use the shot clock. Miami will try to grind out victories due to lack of depth on the bench. EDGE: OREGON

Oregon guard Bryce Taylor is coming into this tournament with some serious steam, scoring 32 points after a perfect game in the Ducks’ Pac-10 tourney final over USC – going 11-for-11, 7-of-7 on 3s, 3-of-3 at the line. EDGE: OREGON

The Redhawks are 5-0 ATS in their last five neutral site games.

The Ducks are 6-0-1 ATS in their last seven neutral site games.

East - #4 Texas vs. #13 New Mexico State (7:25 PM ET)

The Aggies are 20-7 ATS in their last 27 games as an underdog.

The Longhorns are 1-5 ATS in their last six NCAA Tournament games as a favorite.

East - #5 USC vs. #12 Arkansas (9:55 PM ET)

USC head coach Tim Floyd hasn’t been to the tournament in more than a decade. Only one Floyd-coached team has lost to a lower-seeded team. On the other end, only one of his teams’ has ever beaten a higher seed. EDGE: USC

The Razorbacks are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 neutral site games as underdogs.

The Trojans are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU loss.

    Bracket-picking Tips

    Bracket-picking Help Articles

Pick at least one No. 3 or No. 4 seed to lose: Only three times in the last 22 seasons has a No. 3 or 4 seed not gone down in the first round. It happened twice in 2006 with both Kansas and Iowa losing (as Boston College needed two overtimes to survive as well). If a top seed is going to lose, it might be from the Big 12, which has seen four top four teams go down since 2001 — Kansas in 2005 (as a No. 3) and 2006 (as a No. 4), and No. 4 Oklahoma and No. 2 Iowa State in 2001. So maybe Texas A&M and Texas aren't the locks that everybody thought.

Big East teams are almost immune — Villanova in 1995 and Syracuse in 2005 were the only 3 or 4 from the conference to be upset since 1992 and both went to overtime before succumbing (three in Villanova's case). This means Wright State will have a tough time knocking out Pittsburgh.

Pick the No. 10 seeds: No. 10 seeds aren't supposed to beat the No. 7, but since seeding began in 1979, at least one No. 10 has beaten a No. 7 every season except for 1993 and 1985. Wait, it gets better. At least two No. 10 seeds have beaten No. 7's in 10 of the last 13 seasons. In 1999, the No. 10's had a clean sweep.

Pick Kentucky, Georgetown, Boston College and North Carolina: It hasn't been a stellar year for the Kentucky, but do at least pick the Wildcats to win one round. They've won 16 straight first-rounders. The best team in this regard until recently was Kansas. Before Bucknell got them, the Jayhawks hadn't lost in the first round since 1975. Boston College has only lost once in the first round since 1968 (12-1). Georgetown is almost as good, going 16-1 since 1981.

Roy Williams is perfect in debut games so the Tar Heels are a lock to win round one.

Don't pick the Mountain West schools: BYU and UNLV are two of the better Mountain West teams the last few seasons, but neither has won an NCAA game since 1993.

Don't pick Winthrop, Central Connecticut State or Eastern Kentucky : None of these conferences these teams represent has won a first-round game since 1989. Both Winthrop and Eastern Kentucky are 0-6 all time in the NCAAs.

Now on to the important stuff: To win the whole thing:

Don't take anyone seeded No. 9 or below: No. 8 Villanova in 1985 is the lowest-seeded team to win the national championship since seeds were introduced in 1979. That's half the field eliminated right there.

Don't pick first-time coaches: Steve Fisher of Michigan is the only coach since 1963 to win the title in his first NCAA appearance as a head coach. This spells doom for Washington State and Tony Bennett and BYU and Dave Rose. Also, Tubby Smith was the only other coach besides Fisher since 1961 to lead a team to the title in his first season at a school. That's double-trouble for Bennett who is in his debut season with the Cougars as well.

Come from a power conference: Since the NCAA allowed more than two teams from each conference to compete, the champion has come from a conference that has sent at least three teams to the field — even the Big West had three when UNLV won in 1990. Goodbye, Memphis, Southern Illinois, Butler, UNLV and Nevada.

Eliminate the No. 5 seeds: Goodbye to USC, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. Only four No. 5s have even reached the Final Four. Florida in 2000 and Indiana in 2002 were the only ones to reach the title game.

Don't lose early the previous season: Only three title-winning schools since 1988 failed to advance at least two rounds in the previous year's tournament (provided the team was in the field). This eliminates North Carolina, Ohio State, Kansas, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, Pittsburgh, Indiana, Arizona, Kentucky and Marquette.

Don't get blown out:: Of the last 12 teams to win the tournament, only Maryland lost a regular-season game by more than 17 points. So go ahead and eliminate Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Boston College. All lost at least once by 18 or more this season.

Don't reach the final, then lose: Kentucky in 1998 is the only team in the last 16 years to make the championship game, lose, then return to win it all the next season. This makes UCLA an extremely unlikely choice.

Don't win the previous year: Duke in 1992 is the only team to repeat as champion since UCLA in 1975 — the pressure will eventually get to Florida.

In case you're keeping track, we're left with four teams, conveniently one from each region — Maryland, Georgetown, Louisville and Duke. Note, this is not our Final Four — we're just trying to determine a champion here.

Be ranked high to start the season: Every winner since 1986 except for Syracuse and Florida has been ranked No. 19 or higher in the Associated Press preseason poll. Louisville was unranked at the beginning of the season, so the Cardinals won't win. Maryland didn't even get a vote so the Terps fall by the wayside as well.

That leaves only two schools that have passed all nine of our criteria — Duke and Georgetown. At this point we'll throw the numbers out the window and use common sense, and common sense says pick Georgetown as your 2007 tournament champion.
