NCAA Picks for Wed, Jan. 31
I'll stick with the Big Ten again today! Not much time for me to do College Hoops, but everyone keep up the good work:
INDIANA Pick (yes, the Badgers are going down today; the Hoosiers will end the winning streak)

Wow- they really showed their bad side last night! I really thought they were mature enough to come back and win last night! As our own coach said, "We are the bad news bears out there!" 15 turnovers in the first half!! Fricken ri-cockulous!
Sorry if you pick rode me yesterday- I lost a ton! That's what you get when you bet on your alma matter!
Time to move on!
Today, I like:
Indiana -1
Tennessee -1 1/2
I see two home teams in pretty close to Must Win games to stay in the conference title hunt. Indiana wins in a statement game. Tennessee wins because of their coach willing them with his orange sportcoat!

BIG XII: Roll with me on KU/Mizzou over 141 1/2 in Aggieville..AKA Manhattan, KS. The Tigers, as you probably know by now, are rollin that 40 minute UAB full court game. K State has the talent to burn them in the press. Big K state lead means Mizzou launches even more 3's...

This play will be my largest of the year, and with the season winding down, I guess it makes it my GOY.
Xavier/Duquesne Over 159.5 (booked this morning)
The Dukes breaking out a new style last few games (from A-10 game notes) and Everhart sounds like he’s lost it…..
STYLE CHANGE: With the indefinite loss of 6-9 forward/center Almamy Thiero due to a blood clot in his lungs, Duquesne head coach Ron Everhart unveiled a "10-40" version of the Dukes on Jan. 21 at UMass. Under the newly-adopted system, Everhart is using the entire 10-man roster to produce a manic 40 minutes of basketball. The Dukes, who currently dress just one player over 6-6, have forced 76 turnovers (25.3 pg.) and averaged 92 points while winning two of their last three contests. In the past three games, Everhart has substituted a total of 172 times - including entire five-man units 23 times - and no player has played fewer than 11 or more than 30 minutes. "The more chaos I'm looking at, the more I'm saying 'yeah'," said Everhart following Duquesne's 96-92 win over Temple on Jan. 27. "Even when we throw the ball away on a fast break - which we did more than once tonight - that's alright. The faster the game goes, the better we feel. For a team with our size, I don't think there is any other way to go."
I looked at the scores from this style. In parentheses are what Duquesne’s opponents were averaging in league play (offense ppg for opp., defensive ppg for opp. vs what Dukes scored) and the variance:
1/21 (Away) UMass 101 (82ppg, +19) Duquesne 87 (77ppg, +10)….so UMass was averaging 82ppg in A-10 games but scored 19 more than that and they were giving up 77ppg and gave up 10 more than that.
1/24 (Home) Duquesne 93 (76ppg, +17) Dayton 89 (73ppg, +16)
1/27 (Home) Duquesne 96 (84ppg, +12) Temple 92 (78ppg, +14)
Each opponent has given up at least 10ppg more vs the Dukes than what they normally do in A-10 play and has scored at least 14ppg more than what they were averaging offensively.
Based on Xavier’s numbers (78ppg for, 70ppg against), maybe something like 92-80.
And on Xavier’s side, they scored less than 70 only once in A-10 games this year (7 games). Versus teams in A-10 ranked 10th or worse in ppg allowed, Xavier has done this offensively:
10th SBU (75ppg allowed) – 1/24 (Away) – Xavier 92-66
11th Dayton (76ppg) – 1/27 (Home) – Xavier 83-67
12th UMass (77ppg) – 1/18 (Home) – Xavier 83-77
13th Duquesne (83ppg) - ???
14th Temple (84ppg) – 1/6 (Home) – Xavier 76-68
Versus those D’s, Xavier has averaged 83.5ppg. With Duquesne’s new style, I would expect more than that. My one concern is that they will be down to 8 scholarship players tonight, so they could get worn down. If they do get tired (either team) and start getting lazy fouls, Duquesne is 1st in A-10 in FT % (74.3%) and Xavier is second (74.1%).
The totals in Duquesne’s 3 games since the new style have been: 188, 182, 188 (the lowest output being 22 points more than tonight’s total). Also, no team has scored fewer than 87 in these games. Unless Xavier tries to slow this thing down, I don’t see how it doesn’t go over 160.
Tonight I’ll also be playing Temple/UR 1H Under 60
In all but their first A-10 game, UR hasn’t scored more than 25 points in the 1H of a conf game. In the 7 games they avg 20.4 1H points, and in their last 3 they have scored an atrocious 13.7 (with a high of 17). The combined 1H output in their A-10 games has averaged 49.7 points and only one of the seven 1H totals has topped 54 (4 of the 7 have been less than 50). I’m playing 1H because UR scores a bunch more in the 2H (36.4 points, 78% increase from 1H).
Temple does have a decent offense and the worst defense in the A-10, but I think UR’s tempo should greatly reduce the possessions and keep the scoring down. The key will also be the status of Dionte Christmas, who leads the A-10 in scoring and is 12th nationally (21.4ppg). He got 17 stitches to his non-shooting hand the end of last game. They said he is a game-time decision and if he plays will wear a pad on his hand. He’s got three straight 30+ games, shoots 44% on 3’s, 89% FTs, leads team in steals, etc. My guess is he plays, but if he’s not listed when we get the line-ups 15 minutes before tip, I’ll go a little bigger on this one.
So that’s my novel for today. Let’s hope Xavier and Duquesne keep running up and down the court filling it up. GL.
A-10: 11-8-2
Other: 9-9-1
