UFC 63
The hackers knocked out our last posts, but let's get it started on UFC 63.
In a deleted post, I talked about the huge fight of the year implications between BJ Penn and Matt Hughes. The line has been pretty steady with Hughes a slight favorite in UFC terms at -210 to -165ish. I have avidly been following both fighters training and will have some great info on who to take in this ultimate grudge match.
A little history...
BJ Penn is part of the bad ass Hawaiian contingent that includes Cabbage Correjia and TUF season winner Kendall "The Spyda" Grove. The usual rule of thumb is this in MMA...if your fighting a Hawaiian, your not gonna knock him out. They also have very good mui tai and striking skills. In fact, Grove and BJ Penn are world champions in abudabi and Pancreas competitions. BJ Penn is one of my favorite fighters of all time because of his flair for the dramatic. He moved up in weight at short notice to give Matt Hughes his only loss in the UFC. He then pulled a Riddick Bowe and basically dumped his title in the trash can and went on to fight in other forums. Hughes has been impatiently waiting to get a shot at the only man I've ever seen submit him. If your a die hard MMA fan or know the scene on the West Coast..you know the Hawaiians are tough as nails, crazy about this sport, and win more than they lose. BJ Penn has come out and said that he's not going to overtrain for this fight. Last time he did aganst St. Pierre, he said the fight was anti climactic. What does this mean? I at first took it as a sure fire sign to lay my money on Hughes NOW before the line shoots up..but I waited because Penn is so damn unpredictable and I hadn't followed up on Hughes yet.
Following the champ and being a huge fan, I've told myself to never EVER bet against Matt Hughes. Then I go ahead and take a washed up Gracie who gets beat down badly by Hughes. So now, as I seriously deliberate going against Hughes again, I remind myself of the Royce Gracie debacle. I've watched the Hughes/Penn fight about 15 times in the last 2 months. (UFC.tv. has a wonderful download that is cheap..great for capping and seeing old fights.)I've also been watching Matt's fights since then. Here's the kicker...no one has challenged Hughes in over a year..his hardest fights are probably happpening as we speak in the Quad Cities as he trains. So here's my betting question...can The Prodigy BJ Penn shock the UFC world yet again and take down the champ? Will Matt Hughes be "ready" for a world class opponent? His last 4 fights have been a joke and this is his first true test in over a year in a half. I'll have a complete fight post and Title fight prediction. But if your just getting into the UFC< you couldn't have asked for a better pay per view headliner. That's all I got, back with fight picks the Friday before the pay per view. In addition, I'll post the full odds when I see them.
