The Oilers became the first eighth seed to advance to the Cup Finals since the NHL instituted the current playoff structure in 1994. Edmonton defeated Detroit and San Jose before disposing of Anaheim this year.

Edmonton now awaits the winner of the Eastern Conference finals between the Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres. That series is tied after four games.
