One NIT play for Tuesday:

Rutgers vs Iowa State (-2) - 4:00pm Pacific - NIT Semifinal

Iowa State head coach Richard Morgan was has all sorts of New York ties. He is a native of Brooklyn, played college basketball at two New York colleges, and was considered one of the top assistant coaches in the country in his 12 years at Syracuse. He was a disappointment in his last head coaching job at Long Beach State but has done a nice job with this Iowa State team. He has been helped by inheriting a very talented team including two true freshman guards that have performed better than anyone could have imagined. Freshman guard Curtis Stinson in particular came from almost nowhere to earn Big 12 conference freshman of the year honors. Stinson led the team with 15.4ppg and finished in the top 15 of the conference in steals, assists, and rebounds.

The Cyclone starting five is excellent. Senior sixth man Marcus Jefferson returned to the team in the final two weeks of the regular season from a personal leave of absence and since then the team has stepped up its level of play. They have been dominant in home games all season long (17-1, wins over Xavier, Kansas, Texas, and others) but late in the season started to show improvement in road games as well. They lost in OT at Kansas by just a point and lost a heartbreaker at Nebraska by just 3. They dominated their opening round Big 12 tournament game against Kansas State and were actually tied with Oklahoma State in Big 12 quarterfinal with about 6 or 7 minutes to play before losing a hard fought game by 8.

Rutgers made it to the NIT final four by playing three straight games at their home gym "The RAC", Iowa State meanwhile owns arguably the most quality win in the NIT thus far, a solid road win at ACC foe Florida State. The Seminoles had to be considered one of the favorites to reach New York. Prior to the NIT, Rutgers had lost 3 straight and 6 of 9 games overall. This team never seemed to find continuity all season long. They have replaced steady junior guard Jual Wiggan with freshman Quincy Douby in the starting lineup and it has worked so far, but playing away from home has been a struggle all season for Rutgers.

Rutgers has two New York natives in their rotation but they play in nearby Jersey and are guaranteed games in New York multiple times a year. For Iowa State head coach Morgan, and leading scorer guard Stinston, this is a rare opportunity for a New York homecoming and I am certain they will be serious about winning tonight. Solid 1 UNIT play.

Supersonics @ Nuggets; Sonics +4 and Over 193 Total Points

It was a frustrating day in the NBA on Monday. We ended up going 3-3 overall, as two of our picks were beaten in the final seconds. That's sports betting. Funny how one never dwells on the last-second jumpers, or the ten-foot putts for bogey that cash monster plays - we always feel like we totally earned those.

Tuesday sees one of the hottest Western Conference teams, Seattle, on the road at one of the coldest in Denver. The Sonics won seven in a row before losing in OT at Portland. One of those seven wins was a rout of Denver. They also beat the Nuggets on the road the last time they met in Denver. The Nuggets are a young team whose inexperience is beginning to show. They have lost five of seven, and we predict another long evening for them. They get Allen and Barry in prime form, and taking the points is the recommended strategy. In addition the Over / Under line seems very low to us. Both these teams are capable of going over 100 tonight, and the Over 193 Total Points is worth a substantial bet.

Value NIT Pick

NIT Pick: Rutgers vs Iowa State; Rutgers +2

Rutgers have a golden opportunity to advance to the NIT final on Tuesday when they face Iowa State. The Scarlet Knights are playing close to home, and they have also played at a high level throughout this tournament. They made short work of a decent Villanova team, and prior to that they showed resilience in a come from behind win against Temple. The Cyclones beat two overrated schools in Marquette, who were poor all year, and Florida State, and on current form alone our feeling is that Rutgers holds a slight edge. Factor in bigger crowd support, and we start to like this underdog play a lot. Take a break from Final Four speculation to cash in on the Big Dance's ugly sibling, and bet Rutgers to win
