4*Denver -- At 3:05 pm, our selection is on the Denver Broncos, as we will fade the Pittsburgh Steelers off their upset win over Indy as a 10-point dog. But since 1980, .300 or better underdogs of less than 10 points are a dreadful 0-20-1 ATS vs. a foe off a SU/ATS win. Take Denver.

3*Seattle -- At 6:35 pm, our selection is on the Seattle Seahawks, as we will fade Carolina, who is off back to back wins as an underdog (vs. the Giants & Bears). But unrested road dogs of +7 or less off back to back SU wins as a dog are a dreadful 14-35-2 ATS vs. non-division foes since 1980, including just 1 ATS win in 5 playoff games. Seattle has won 9 straight home games (7-2 ATS), and its average margin of victory has been 16 points. And teams playing their 3rd straight road game are 0-7 ATS in the Playoffs since 1995 if they scored 24 or more in their previous game. Take Seattle.

AFC Championship: Steelers @ Broncos (2 Plays)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Pittsburgh Steelers @ Denver Broncos

    Preview:

The Steelers officially quieted all critics last week by dominating the best team in football in their own backyard. Not only were they able to beat the Colts in every facet of the game, they were even able to overcome a series of favorable calls for the Colts. The Steelers continue to play excellent football. Roethlisberger finally was able to prove that he could step his game up in the big game. He engineered a magnificent opening drive, and was able to avoid costly mistakes throughout the game. The Steelers running game continued to dictate the game, while it took the Colts 58 minutes to find a remedy for the blitzing Steelers defense. After winning two consecutive road victories against teams that beat them earlier in the season, the road for the Steelers has just begun. They now have to travel to the thin air of Denver to challenge the best home team in football. Will their momentum and solid play be enough to beat the best team left in the playoffs, or does three consecutive road games and thin air simply don’t mix?

There might not be a better coached and complete team than the Broncos. Their offense is a systematic machine that plays error free football, tires out opposing defenses, and uses a committee running attack that attacks different areas of the opposing defense. Their passing game is a compliment, designed to feed off the run, and keep the defense off balance. Their defense, although not as complete as their offense, has been experimenting with different looks. The result has been a steady improvement at putting pressure on the quarterback, stopping the run, and defending the second level passing game. After watching the only team that matches up well against them go down to the Steelers last week, it seems apparent the Broncos have a clear path to the Super Bowl ring. Right? Not so fast. The Broncos were actually outplayed last week on offense and defense, and were merely opportunist of an uncharacteristically sloppy game by the defending World Champs. If the Broncos want to advance this week, they must improve their play from last week, or they will quickly become another victim of the Steelers “hit listâ€Â

    The Pinnacle Pulse

The Inside Wagering Line From Pinnacle Sports Book By Simon Noble

Officiating can be a factor that makes handicapping games that much more

difficult and last weekend witnessed some of the most questionable NFL

officiating ever seen. No matter how much time you spend analyzing a

match-up, a judgment call can be the ultimate decider of who wins and who

loses. Losing bettors and fans remember these calls for a very long time.

The officiating last weekend was so bad that the NFL admitted making a

mistake when Troy Polamalu's diving interception in the fourth quarter was

overturned. Fortunately, that mistake had no effect on the overall outcome

of the game. However, for those players that bet on the second half, it

    was a different story.

Pittsburgh backers took the Steelers +7.5 for the second half. After the

interception reversal, the Colts scored a TD followed by a 2-point

conversion on the drive. Without that score, Indianapolis -7.5 would not

have covered and Steelers bettors would have won the money.

Earlier in the same game, the Steelers were facing fourth and inches when

two Colts charged across the line of scrimmage and pointed at a Steeler

lineman. Play was halted and no penalty called although there should have

    been a call for either a false-start or off-sides.

The New England-Denver game also had a number of questionable calls

appearing to favor the home team. In the first quarter, Patriots

cornerback Asante Samuel was called for pass interference, advancing the

Broncos 39 yards to the 1-yard line for an eventual score. Replay showed

that Samuel had position and made very little contact with Denver receiver

    Ashley Lelie on the play.

Later in the game, Denver's Champ Bailey intercepted a pass in the

end-zone and nearly returned it for a touchdown before he was hit and

fumbled out of bounds. The officials ruled it remained Denver's ball

although it appeared that the ball went out of bounds in the end-zone, and

New England should have regained possession at their own 20 yard-line via

    a touchback.

Let's hope things are better this weekend as there are now just three more

competitive games before the curtain comes down on the NFL this season.

Although these are clearly the biggest games of the year, it's wise to

stay focused on your money management. There's always a temptation to bet

more, but these games should be treated no differently than any other from

    a handicapper's perspective.

Resist the temptation to bet more on a side or total simply because the

season is coming to an end. It's all about winning and you could

potentially find more value to justify a stronger play on Sunday's

Niagara-St. Peter's NCAA match-up for instance, than betting the house on

    the AFC Championship game.

If you find props or other bets you like, spread your money out as you

normally would, but don't throw it all on one side bet. Too many factors

(or even referee calls) can go wrong in one game to justify overextending

    yourself.

Before making your plays this weekend, remember that there's a limited

time between the AFC and NFC Championship games to get your bets in -

typically, just 15 minutes or less. With all the viewers of the AFC title

game running to their computers to get action on the Panthers-Seahawks

game, there is an annual 15-minute period that's traditionally the most

intense time of the year for online sports books.

From past experience, many sports books will unfortunately not be able to

handle the stress this puts on their Web servers and database. Websites

may be slow or worse still, they might be down altogether as their servers

buckle under the load. If you want to get action on the NFC title game at

a sports book other than Pinnacle Sports, consider making your plays well

    before the Pittsburgh-Denver game ends.

If you fail to get your bets in before the game kicks off in Seattle, you

still have another option - live betting at Pinnacle Sports. The Pinnacle

Sports book is known for outstanding value on sides and totals, and our

live lines are no different. For in-running betting throughout the game,

we use a -108 style pricing model, which still offers better value than

the normal price offered by other sportsbooks before the game kicks off.

If you like to get your plays in early, you can benefit even more from

Pinnacle Sportsbook's reduced margin wagering, which uses a -104 pricing

model that gives bettors up to 60% better value on NFL sides than other

bookmakers. If you haven't placed your wagers yet, you might want to

consider who the sharps and public like this weekend:

    Pittsburgh (+3 +106) at Denver O/U 41

The Steelers have impressed, winning two straight playoff road games over

the Bengals and the Colts. Pittsburgh has made it this far by utilizing a

strategy similar to Denver's - running the ball and defending the run

    first.

Denver and Pittsburgh had the second and fifth-ranked rushing attacks

respectively in the NFL and on run-defense, they ranked #2 and #3.

Featuring the run has helped both teams reduce turnovers as sacks and

turnovers happen with far more frequency when teams are forced to pass. By

focusing on the run and rush defense, both teams have avoided

interceptions and get more opportunities to pressure opposing teams'

    quarterbacks.

We've seen heavy volume on this game after opening the spread with the

Steelers at +3 (-116). The public clearly favors the Steelers, placing

five bets on Pittsburgh for every two on the Broncos. The sharps are

betting this game also, but they're split on the game.

After opening the total at 42.5 we have seen a classic, sharp versus

public duel. The sharps are mostly on the under, while a majority of the

bets placed have been on the over. As is often the case, the wise guys

have been placing bigger wagers and despite the larger bet count on the

over from the public, sharp action has forced the total down to 41.

    Carolina (+3.5 -102) at Seattle O/U 43.5

Carolina and Pittsburgh are both attempting to become the first team to

win three consecutive road playoff games since the playoff format changed

in 1990. Only two wildcard teams have even won 2 consecutive games

previously - Indy in 1995-96 and Jacksonville in 1996-97. If the lines are

any indication though, Sunday might be the "day of the dog" - as 3 and 3.5

point underdogs, the market strongly suggests that one of these teams

    could win outright.

We initially opened the Panthers as 6-point dogs in the NFC title game.

The early money quickly pushed this down to +3.5 and we're still taking

more bets on Carolina by a ratio of 2:1. Some of our sharps took the

Panthers at +6 but there's no clear consensus between the wise guys at

    +3.5.

We opened the total at 43 and the public and sharps are again fighting

over the number. At 43 we took twice as many bets on the over as on the

under. The market as a whole has crept up, even though the sharps were

mainly taking the under. On high profile games like this the public tends

to line up on the over and the sharps will often take a contrarian

    position.

So often over the years, there have been teams in the playoffs that we all knew going in were going to dominate and more than likely win the Super Bowl. Some years we even had two teams we knew would take care of business in the playoffs and more than likely meet in the Super Bowl. But the NFL's goal of parity is becoming more and more a reality as each year passes. Probably no more so than this year where we find four teams remaining, any of which could be Super Bowl Champs a couple of weeks from now. Certainly we wouldn't be surprised to see any of them win it all. By the same token, no one team stands out as a team that is a lock to win.

From a betting standpoint, it's tough to come up with any glaring weaknesses that can be exploited by any of these teams against each other. All of the remaining four are solid, well rounded teams that do everything well. They are all plus in the turnover category. They all have been playing well on the defensive side of the ball. They all have been consistent offensively. All of been able to run the ball. All four QB's have played well making few mistakes. All four coaches are proven winners and all four coaches have made the trip to the big game.

So the angle we'll use in this weeks games is the obvious one, but one that still shouldn't be overlooked. There's a reason only one team in Super Bowl history has made it to the big game by winning all of their playoff games on the road. It's very difficult to do. The odds of BOTH Carolina and Pittsburgh winning this weekend would be long.

On neutral fields these teams may play each other 100 times and each win 50. But both Denver and Seattle field significant home field advantages that when combined with the fact that the Steelers and the Panthers will be playing their 3rd straight road playoff games (Carolina will be playing it's 4th straight game on the road) it should be enough to sway the edge toward the home teams. As always, the teams that make the mistakes will lose. The odds of making mistakes are significantly higher for the Steelers and Panthers this week. We are just playing the percentages here.

The 12th man is very real. Anytime a crowd can make an opposing team make mistakes by causing false starts and making it tough to call audibles on both sides of the ball, you have an edge. Yardage eventually translates into points on the scoreboard. While this edge is always present, it increases in games like these. Should the Panthers or the Steelers fall behind early, either game could get out of hand.

The fact that the visitors in both games have been living out of suitcases for 3 or 4 weeks while both home teams have been home relaxing and getting healthy since the Holidays will also bode well for our cause.

Seattle is probable getting the least respect of these four teams. Most are using the age old argument that Seattle "hasn't played anyone" and or "Seattle is in a weak division" Or "Seattle plays the 49ers twice".

While that's all very true, let's face it. This is STILL the NFL. A league which, as mentioned above, has parity. A league where there really isn't that much difference talent wise between the best teams and the worst. A player here. A player there. A coach here or there. These days teams go from worst to first in one year. The bottom line is, it's not the Seahawks fault who they have played. They still won. They were 9-0 at home winning by an average margin of 16 points!!

As far as the Broncos go, well, no one is using that argument with them. They did play good teams and they do play in a strong division and guess what? All they did was win as well. Also going 9-0 at home.

Only one way to look this week in each of these games.

FSU’s 6-10, 240 Diego Romero has GOT to be starting to play more minutes now,

doesn’t he? In a rarity, Hamilton now has the kind of roster that can wear down

Carolina. Miami-FL won at Chapel Hill despite shooting just 38%, and FSU is as big,

and can shoot better. In the near future, you may be reading more recaps like this AP

wrap-up: “The Hurricanes played plenty of zone defense to collapse on 6-9 Tyler Hansbrough, sending a stream of double-teams at the rookie and

forcing others to step up. Hansbrough finished with a career-high 25 points, but managed

only one field goal in the final 13 1/2 minutes and went several stretches without

touching the ball. Reyshawn Terry was the only other Tar Heel to finish in double

figures with 18 points; the rest of the team shot 10-for-32. North Carolina had 17

    turnovers.â€Â
