Rose Bowl--Texas vs USC (-8)
Let's begin with some incredible facts:
These teams combined win streaks have not seen them lose in 53 straight games (USC 34 and Texas 19)
BOTH offenses average 50 points per game
USC's 20-3 SU on this field
Texas is 7-0 ATS vs bowl teams in '05
Hard to find much fault with either side. But history gives us a remarkable angle. Over the decades #1 has faced #2 17 times. In those meetings #2 has covered 14 times.
While each side has gaudy stats, USC's number have been accomplished against decidedly better opponents.
USC has faced:
The #1 composite pass offenses in all of major college football
The #5 pass defenses in the country
The #4 total offenses in the US
Texas hasn't faced the composite Top 10 in any major category. In fact, the Horns' best strength in average opponent was taking on the 18th toughest rush offenses.
Some other Texas numbers:
They've faced the 73rd best pass offenses...the 38th best total offenses and--get this--the 102nd strongest pass defenses
In short, there's a major difference in quality of the schedules these two played. USC's defense improved late in the year and should be even better with the return of some key injured players.
Vince Young's had a remarkable season but he'll make some very careless plays at times. Such mistakes could be fatal against an incredibly talented Trojan team. USC seems the better balanced offense while UT's almost totally dependent on Young's performance.
Should be an NFL scout's dream. Hopefully it'll be a wonderful game and not the blowout last year's title game was. Given the "one man gang" nature of the UT attach, I like Pete Carroll when he has weeks and weeks to prepare a defense to stop that one man.
SINGLE PLAY: TAKE USC MINUS THE POINTS

(good grief the write up they have!!!!!!, who even bothers to read this???)
With 34 straight victories and consecutive national championships the University of Southern California has placed it’s self firmly in the NCAA record books. The No. 1 ranked Trojans can write their own page in the record book Wednesday night by beating the No. 2 Longhorns in the Rose Bowl and thus winning a third straight national title for the first time in history.

USC (-7) over Texas by 3
Superlatives abound in a game between a pair of teams who have won a combined 53 consecutive games. No arguments this year that this is for the National Championship. USC gained an incredible 7.54 YP play on 581 YPG (70 more than the 2nd best offense) with a balanced, explosive offense that averaged 50 PPG. They ran for 6.55 YPR. Amazingly, Texas can virtually match those offensive fireworks with an attack that gained more than 7 YP play, more than 500 YPG and 51 PPG. They do have a greater propensity for rushing the football (66% to 52% for USC). Though the USC defense suffered numerous injuries, it will be at nearly full strength for this game. Nonetheless, they did allow over 5.0 YP play, 345 YPG and 21 PPG. The Longhorn defense had superior numbers. They allowed just 4.1 YP play, 281 YPG, 15 PPG and only 49% completions. They were 10-2 ATS, yet they come in here with the clear underdog mentality. It's that intangible that is the clear edge when handicapping this contest, for things have come a bit too easily for the defending champs. Their back-to-back championships included a 55-19 blowout of Oklahoma last year. That greater than 20 point Bowl victory alone is a 49-21 ATS indicator against them. Sporting consecutive Heisman Trophy in their backfield is yet another reason for USC complacency and greater intensity from the underdog. A narrow 38-37 Bowl win for Texas LY implies no over confidence on their part. Finally from a technical perspective there is no way to ignore the fact that +7+ Bowl dogs are now 94-61 ATS L25Y including a mind boggling 10-1 ATS this season. We line up with the Longhorns in the Rose Bowl as the better defensive dog getting 7 or more points, in a game where the biggest surprise may be the defensive superiority of each of these teams

Usc Texas Rose Bowl Game
GAME NOTES: The game that most of the college football world hoped would take place finally will, when the second-ranked Texas Longhorns and the top-ranked USC Trojans square off in Pasadena for the national championship, in the 92nd- annual Rose Bowl on January 4th. The two-time defending national champion Trojans bring a 34-game win streak into this contest and will try to win a record third consecutive national title. There certainly were some close calls along the way in 2005, but Pete Carroll's troops made it through another season unscathed, finishing with a 12-0 record, while holding the top spot in the national polls from start to finish. USC owns a 28-15 bowl record all-time including wins in three straight bowl games, including last year's 55-19 thrashing of Oklahoma to capture last season's national crown in the Orange Bowl. USC is making its 30th all-time appearance in the Rose Bowl, going 21-8 in the previous 29 matchups. The Longhorns will not be intimidated by the Trojans in this one, as they bring their own extended win streak into the matchup. Mack Brown's squad has won 19 straight games and breezed through the majority of its 2005 campaign, en route to a 12-0 record and capturing a 70-3 decision over Colorado in the Big 12 Championship Game. This is Texas' first trip to a BCS title game and the first time UT has been in a title game as one of the top two ranked programs since 1983. All-time, Texas is 21-21-2 in the postseason, including a thrilling 38-37 win over Michigan in last year's Rose Bowl, the Longhorns' only appearance in the postseason classic. USC has won all four previous meetings with Texas, but the two teams have not met since 1967.
One of the most explosive offensive teams in NCAA history, the 2005 Longhorns certainly made it look easy. The team put up 50.9 ppg this year, while finding it easy to move the ball both on the ground (273.8 ypg) and through the air (234.7 ypg). Of course, a major reason for the success was the maturation of Heisman finalist Vince Young under center. The junior signal-caller had an outstanding season, completing 63.9 percent of his passes for 2,769 yards and 26 TDs. He also led the Longhorns in rushing, averaging 6.2 yards per carry, en route to 850 yards and nine more scores. In all, the lethal ground game produced 50 touchdowns this season. Young's TD total on the ground actually ranked fourth on the team behind Jamaal Charles (844 yards, 11 TDs), Ramonce Taylor (501 yards, 11 TDs) and Henry Melton (432 yards, 10 TDs). The vertical game was effective without the services of a bona fide star receiver. David Thomas led the team in receptions this year, with 40 catches for 525 yards and five TDs. Billy Pittman (30 receptions, for 697 yards and five TDs) and Limas Sweed (28 receptions, for 480 yards and five TDs) were viable options downfield as well. The offensive line played a huge role as well in the flawless season, led by a pair of All-American bookends in Justin Blalock and Jonathan Scott and All-Big 12 guard Will Allen.
As explosive as the Texas offense was, the defense was also a big reason for the lopsided wins week in and week out. The Longhorns only allowed 280.3 yards of total offense per outing this season, leading to a mere 14.6 ppg. There were plenty of awards thrown the defense's way this season, including safety Michael Huff being the first player in UT history to win the Jim Thorpe Award. Huff finished second on the team in tackles (97), with nine TFLs, two sacks, one fumble recovery and one interception. Fellow safety Michael Griffin also had a stellar campaign, with a team-high 116 tackles to go with two INTs and three fumble recoveries. Up front, the Longhorns were led by the play of All- Big 12 First Team members Tim Crowder and Rodrique Wright. Both were awful hard to contend with in the trenches, with Crowder posting 49 total tackles, with nine TFLs and three sacks and Wright putting up 46 tackles, 14 TFLs and 4.5 sacks. Still, the top producer along the line was rush end Brian Robinson (57 tackles), who led the team in both TFLs (15) and sacks (seven). Throw in First Team All-Big 12 linebacker Aaron Harris (87 tackles, 12.0 TFLs, 4.0 sacks and one INT) and it is clear that the Texas defense is stocked with talent.
Although the Longhorns led the nation in scoring (50.9 ppg), the Trojans may be the one team that can go toe-to-toe on the scoreboard, finishing second nationally with a gaudy scoring average of 50.0 ppg. Like Texas, USC can move the ball on the ground and through that air, resulting in a whopping 580.2 yards of total offense per game. The difference on this side of the ball may well be the fact that the Trojans have more offensive playmakers than Texas. Not only is former Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart under center, but the current Heisman winner Reggie Bush is in the backfield as well. Leinart put up Heisman worthy numbers again this season, completing 65 percent of his passes for 3,450 yards and 27 TDs. However, Bush certainly distinguished himself as the most dangerous player in the country with his junior campaign. Bush averaged nearly nine yards per carry in 2005, rushing for 1,658 yards and 15 TDs. He was also third on the team in receptions (31), leading to an additional 383 yards and two more TDs. Bush was not alone abusing teams on the ground, as talented tailback LenDale White was a perfect complement, rushing for 1,178 yards and a team-high 21 TDs. In all, the Trojans were able to produce 47 rushing TDs along with 31 TD receptions. Leading the way in that category were game-breaking wideouts Dwayne Jarrett (81 receptions, 1,153 yards and 15 TDs) and Steve Smith (57 receptions, 928 yards and five TDs). Much like Texas, USC has a dominating offensive front, led by All-Americans Taitusi Lutui and Sam Baker.
With an offensive juggernaut leading the way, the USC defense was often overshadowed. This side of the ball could be considered a weakness of the team, but the Trojan defense has still had moments of stellar play in 2005. The numbers are rather mediocre, as USC has allowed 344.7 yards per game, including 227.3 ypg through the air. Despite the less than ideal statistics, the Trojans made defensive stops when needed and certainly made their share of big plays. Overall, USC recorded 71 TFLs, 32 sacks and 37 takeaways, including an eye-popping 22 interceptions. All-American safety Darnell Bing led the way in that category with four picks, including one returned for a touchdown. Defensive ends Lawrence Jackson (46 tackles, team-high 13.0 TFLs, team-high 10.0 sacks) and Frostee Rucker (51 tackles, 12.0 TFLs, 6.5 sacks) provided ample pressure off the edges, while linebacker Oscar Lua (team-high 60 tackles) was able to freelance in the middle of the field.
Texas has finally ascended the Big 12 mountain and put itself in position to reach the pinnacle of the sport this year. However, as well as Young and company have played, they are going up against a team that has a pair of Heisman winners and as good a supporting cast as there is. Carroll will put his players in position to make plays in this one, as this USC team will probably add to its collegiate lore.

Rose Bowl
Texas (12-0) vs. USC (12-0) (January 4, 8:00 Eastern)
This total opened up at a ridiculously high 75. It has since dropped to a more reasonable 69.5. Why so high? Well, you have one of the best offenses ever in college football with the Trojans. They put up 50 points per game this season and 580 yards per game. Texas is no slouch having scored even more (50.9 per game) while racking up 508 yards of offense per game. USC put up 7.5 yards per play on offense against defenses that on average allowed 5.6. Texas acculumlated 7.1 per play vs. defenses allowing 5.2 on average. Needless to say, these offenses are scary good. USC's defense is good but not great while Texas had impressive defensive numbers and ended the season ranked sixth in defensive yardage allowed. Bowl ames with big totals (over 60) this year are 5-2 OVER. Including in that was the UCLA/Northwestern game with a posted total of 74.5 in which 88 points were scored. Since 1992, Texas is 12-1 OVER vs. excellent passing teams with a ! completion pct. of 62% or better and 15-5 OVER on the road vs. good offensive teams that score 31 or more points/game. This season, all 12 of the Long Horn's games went OVER. USC is another story. They were just 6-5 OVER as the public, who generally like to bet OVER, pushed the high-profile team's totals up all season. Which way will this one go? Well, if you see USC's offense having their way as they have all season and winning and covering, it probably goes over. If you like Texas to surprise USC and keep it close, it probably goes UNDER.

The Atlanta Fixer
TEXAS +7 vs Southern Cal- So the game everyone’s wanted to see all season has actually happened… I had no idea ABC, the NCAA & Danny Sheridan could get away with such a huge conspiracy… Overrated Vince Young and his big, whiny mouth versus two Heisman winners, what else could you ask for??? How about hardcore nudity??? Whatever the total is, take it over, and expect a pretty good game… Todd Marijuanavich & Major Applewhite must be rolling over in their graves...
i think his pick is the over.
he is 8-0 but i also think this is his first total also
