bowl services for december 29th
Thursdays Service Plays 12-29
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Handicapper: Scott Spreitzer
League: College Football
Event: Utah vs Georgia Tech on 12/29/2005 at 13:30
Condition: Utah
Grade: Ungraded
Promotion: I'm taking Utah plus points on Thursday. The Utes won 3 of their last 4, including a 41-34 win over BYU in their final game to reach bowl eligibility. Due to the struggle to get here, Utah coaches and players have said that they feel like they appreciate this bowl game even more than last year's appearance in the Fiesta. The Utes ranked 12th in the nation in total yards per game and they averaged 38.3 PPG over their last 4 contests. QB Brian Johnson is out which means Brett Ratliff will be making his second start. If it goes like his first, Utah has a great shot to win outright. Ratliff threw 4 TD passes against BYU, including the game winner. GA Tech has a dominant receiver in Calvin Johnson who could give Utah fits under normal circumstances. But team leader and QB Reggie Ball has spent the entire month of December complaining and whining about "having to play in this game." At 7-4, what did he expect? Reggie Ball is horribly overrated as a passer. He's connected on just 48% of his passes, with a 10-10 TD to INT ratio, and he averaged just 5.6 yards per pass! GA Tech is and will be looking past Utah, which I believe will lead to an outright win by the dog. But I'll gladly take the points. Utah plus points is my Line Error Bowl Game of the Year! Thanks! Good Luck! Scott.

Emerald Bowl
Georgia Tech -8½ vs. Utah: Three years ago, the Yellow Jackets came out to the Bay area and lost to Fresno State 30-21 in the Silicon Valley Football Classic. That was coach Chan Gailey's first year at Tech. Even though the Jackets have to be a bit disappointed to be in this bowl, can't see Utah pulling a Fresno-type surprise on Tech again. In their last two seasons, the Yellow Jackets have blown out their bowl opponents by an average score of 51-12. With victories this year over Auburn and Miami, Tech was hoping for a bowl closer to home to show off its vaunted defense. That defense held opponents to 17 or less eight times this year.
Utah finished the season in strong fashion, winning four straight, including the finale as an 11-point underdog at BYU. In that game the Utes were forced to unveil second-string quarterback Brett Ratliff after starter Brian Johnson left the previous game with a broken leg. Ratliff was amazing, running the spread offense perfectly. He ran the ball 19 times for 112 yards and also threw four TDs while completing 17-of-32 passes. Of course there's a huge difference between Georgia Tech's defense and BYU's. And the Yellow Jackets have seen the type of spread offense Utah runs. When Tech has the ball a key will be Utah's MWC Defensive Player of the Year Eric Weddle covering the Yellow Jackets great wide receiver Calvin Johnson.
All things being equal, Tech appears to be the much better team. And Gailey has proven he knows how to get his team ready for a bowl game.
The pick: Georgia Tech

Season record .excellent and free ..60 ~ 40 ~ 2
bowl record up to today..6 ~ 5..1-1 yesterday
upcoming plays..
Dec. 29;;Emerald Bowl;;San Francisco;;Georgia Tech-Utah;;Georgia Tech by 8
Pick: Georgia Tech, 37-17
Want a reason to watch this? Here's one good one: Tech WR Calvin Johnson, a future NFL star. No player in the game makes more spectacular catches. But don't the Yellow Jackets deserve better than a trip to the West Coast to play a 6-5 Utah team that lost starting QB Brian Johnson late in the season? Utes look to be out of their league here.
Dec. 29;;Holiday Bowl;;San Diego;;Oregon-Oklahoma;;Oregon by 3
Pick: Oregon, 31-17
We've seen it happen before, most recently with California last year. A 10-1 team is snubbed by the BCS, then bombs in a lesser bowl (like the Holiday). The Ducks are the better team, even with Dennis Dixon at QB for the injured Kellen Clemens, but will they play inspired football? Sooners quarterback Rhett Bomar needs to be mindful of Oregon DB Aaron Gipson, the nation's leader with seven interceptions. Oklahoma's defense is still suspect.
Dec. 30;;Music City Bowl;;Nashville, Tenn;;Minnesota-Virginia;;Minnesota by 3
Pick: Minnesota, 30-16
It has been a good week for Virginia. No assistant coaches have bailed out on Al Groh. Erratic Cavs, perennial underachievers under Groh, will play this game after losing both coordinators and two assistants. They better hope someone knows how to stop the run. Gophers will grind away with Laurence Maroney and Gary Russell. And QB Brian Cupito has improved.
Dec. 30;;Vitalis Sun Bowl;;El Paso, Texas;;UCLA-Northwestern;;UCLA by 3 1/2
Pick: Northwestern, 44-37
Now this is what a non-BCS bowl matchup should look like: Two of the country's best offenses facing two of the nation's worst defenses. Whoever has the ball last wins. A fun QB showdown with Northwestern's Brian Basanez dueling against UCLA's Drew Olson. And two top-flight running backs in the Bruins' Maurice Drew and the Wildcats' Tyrell Sutton.
Dec. 30;;Independence Bowl;;Shreveport, La.;;South Carolina-Missouri;;South Carolina by 4
Pick: South Carolina, 24-14
It's hard not to be impressed by the coaching job Steve Spurrier did at South Carolina this year. He even turned Blake Mitchell into a serviceable quarterback -- something not many people thought was possible. And he is as impossible as ever to work for, with three assistants leaving after the regular-season finale. Missouri has never reached its potential with Brad Smith at QB, and Big 12 schools could be exposed this bowl season.
Dec. 30;;Peach Bowl;;Atlanta;;Miami-LSU;;No line
Pick: Miami 23-17.
The uncertain status of Tigers QB JaMarcus Russell (shoulder) and the uncertain emotion of Miami in a non-BCS affair make this a game not even the Vegas sharpies will touch. Defenses should rule, but both running games can be effective. If Russell can play, LSU has a chance. If not, Miami's defense will carry the day.
Dec. 31;;Meineke Car Care Bowl;;Charlotte, N.C.;;North Carolina State-South Florida;;North Carolina State by 6
Pick: South Florida, 24-17
A shining example of why there are too many bowl games. Wolfpack earned a "home" bowl thanks to victories over Eastern Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State in a 6-5 season. The defense is solid, but the passing game is a mess. USF lost its final two but still earned its first-ever bowl bid. TB Andre Hall, the Big East's leading rusher, holds the key to their success.
Dec. 31;;Liberty Bowl;;Memphis, Tenn.;;Fresno State-Tulsa;;Fresno State by 7
Pick: Tulsa, 37-34
If the pre-USC Fresno State team shows up, the Bulldogs will be a handful. But if it's the team that saw an 8-1 start dissolve into an 8-4 finish after giving the Trojans all they could handle, Tulsa can pull off the upset. Fresno QB Paul Pinegar threw for 3,122 yards, but had 11 interceptions the last three games. Tulsa has the nation's top passing-catching tight end in Garrett Mills and had to win the C-USA title game on the road to get here.
Dec. 31;;Houston Bowl;;Houston;;TCU-Iowa State;;TCU by 4
Pick: TCU, 34-17
Junior QB Jeff Ballard has given TCU's offense the balance it once lacked with the threat of a passing game. And the Horned Frogs have a gamebreaker they like to utilize in wide receiver/kick return Cory Rodgers. This will also be like a home game for TCU, which won its last nine and relishes the chance to knock off a BCS conference school. Cyclones could have won the Big 12 North but couldn't beat Kansas in their finale. ISU's QB Bret Meyer, a sophomore, is still a work in progress

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29
JAMES MADISON over YALE by 3 (Corpus Christi, TX)
The Elis from the Ivy have been a car wreck on the road losing 15 of 19 since the beginning of
last year, most of them by double digits. The question is whether or not perennial bottom feeder
James Madison can rise to the occasion in the favorite role. JAMES MADISON, 68-65.
LOYOLA CHICAGO over *CLEVELAND STATE by 3
State lost twice to Loyola last year, the second time by four points at Loyola because it couldn’t
survive a 24-11 disadvantage on the stripe. The Loyolans were a so-so conference team last
year scoring and yielding 70 PPG and were minus seven PPG on the road. This season in four
away games Loyola is being out scored by 10 PPG. Think home dog or don’t think at all. LOYOLA
CHICAGO, 74-71.
*KANSAS over NEW ORLEANS by 17
Strange team, this group of Jayhawks. We can’t find a point guard, reliable outside shooter or
post up big man on the roster which makes us wonder who was recruiting and what did he or
she see that we didn’t. Kansas is playing solid defense which is good enough on most nights to
dissect the Pepperdines and New Orleans of the world, but you don’t want to be laying 20 or
more points on a team that can have two or three five-minute stretches per game without hitting
a shot. KANSAS, 70-53.
TEXAS TECH over *NEW MEXICO STATE by 2
History says that Bob Knight will turn this team around eventually, but must confess that we’re
running out of patience. The Red Raiders have lost eight of their last dozen road games. TEXAS
TECH, 73-71.
*NEVADA over UL-LAFAYETTE by 16
BEST BET
SAN FRANCISCO over *FRESNO STATE by 4
This is the time of the year when that rigorous early schedule should start paying second
year coach some dividends. The Dons have already gone up against Stanford, Texas Tech,
Pacific, Wichita state and Marquette and while the results have been mixed, the experience
has been, according to that famous commercial, priceless. Frisco shoots the ball well enough
to stay close to Fresno whose defense is allowing 77 PPG and opponents to convert 40% of
their treys and 24 of their last 49 (48.9%). SAN FRANCISCO, 77-73.
*WASHINGTON over ARIZONA STATE by 23
The Sun Devils are playing their first game since scoring 43 points at Iowa while clanking 35
of 53 shots in Iowa City 12 days ago. Is that enough time to get your shooting touch back? It
better be because the Huskies have been shooting 50% at home for a year plus. WASHINGTON,
85-62.
RECOMMENDED
*WASHINGTON STATE over ARIZONA by 10 (Spokane, WA)
Dick Bennett, now in his third year at State, is starting to deliver the goods. His first two
teams were known for their defense and nothing much else, but this gang can shoot
straight and, in fact, are hovering around 50% at home. The Cougars beat the Wildcats in
Arizona last year and lost by one, 57-56, in OT in Washington and that team had Channing
Frye and Salim Stoudamire, a ton of offense that Bennett doesn’t have to worry about.
WASHINGTON STATE, 77-67.
CALIFORNIA over *USC by 4 (Staples Center, LA)
Two double-digit losses at the hands of the Men of Troy will be avenged now that Leon Powe is
back and patrolling the paint for the Golden Bears. USC was a +10 in rebounding in those two
easy wins. Not this time. CALIFORNIA, 73-69.
*UCLA over STANFORD by 12
*UNLV over LOYOLA MARYMOUNT by 13
*HAWAII over PENNSYLVANIA by 7
Gossner Foods Classic-Dee Glen Smith Spectrum (Logan, UT)
*UTAH STATE over ARKANSAS LITTLE ROCK by 16
The Aggies should score at will in their own arena where they are shooting 56% overall and 50%
from trey town. UTAH STATE, 85-69.

Wise Guy…
UTAH +8’ Georgia Tech
Don’t let there be any question that the Utes are taking this game very seriously. "It's been extremely tough on us both physically and mentally just because we've been working so hard," said junior cornerback Eric Weddle. "It's been tough, kind of like summer workouts, just because we want to be prepared for this game and not come out lackadaisical like some teams have done thus far in the bowl season." With four straight bowl victories dating back to the 1999 Las Vegas Bowl, the Utes take postseason games seriously. "We're excited to be a part of this bowl game in San Francisco and see all the sights," Weddle continued. "But we're here for a reason and that's to win a bowl game."
Tech has been very inconsistent all year and we expect it to continue.
CBB
Wise Guy…
KANSAS -21 New Orleans
Going with home teams in non-conference games off a 20 point or more win is 635-457 +132.3.
NEW MEXICO STATE +3 Texas Tech
The Red Raiders (6-6) have been hurt by injuries to four players this year, but when the team arrived for practice on Christmas Day, junior guard Drew Coffman informed the staff that he no longer wanted to remain on the team. It is no small loss. Coffman played in 11 games this year and started four of them. His best game of his college career came on Nov. 23 against Furman. The 6-foot-1 guard from Midland scored a career-high 22 points in Tech's 83-74 victory.
It also makes focusing on corrections a bit tougher and focus they need. Since opening the season with victories in five of seven games, Tech has dropped four of its last five, and all four losses have come by double digits. Knight brought in seven freshmen and one junior-college transfer and the Raiders have been hit by injuries that prevented LucQuente White, Damir Suljagic, Darryl Dora and Jon Plefka from playing at some point this year.
While Tech continues to shuffle with young players who struggle more on the road, State used the time off to have a transfer laden roster continue to gel. Tech has yet to win away from United Spirit Arena, losing at San Francisco and UNLV while also falling in three nuetral-site contests.
Texas Tech assistant coach Steve Robinson knows this is no easy contest. "New Mexico State is going to throw multiple defenses at you, both man-to-man and zone," Robinson said. "They're going to be hungry because this is their final test before conference. They should have a good crowd and they're going to probably try and go at us inside so we have to be ready to play."
Major…
HAWAII -8’ Pennsylvania
Going with home favorites of 3’-9’ in a non-conference game off a home win is 467-347 +85.3.
BINGHAMTON +5’ Idaho State
We know about the Binghamton injuries. We also know our official outlaw line is see ISU as -2. The official outlaw line is what the odds would be if there was no consideration given to public perception and balancing the action. It is the more accurate line from the standpoint of the bettor. The Bearcats are actually responding to adversity. Despite the injury woes and poor record, the Bearcats are playing somewhat better than at the start of the season. Guards Andre Heard and Troy Hailey have averaged a combined 42.5 points in the team's last two games. BU missed potential game-tying shots against both Albany and Central Connecticut State.
"Coming back from break, we played two close games that were better games for us," Fithian said. "The team and the players had more confidence in each other and it felt like maybe we were turning it around. I think we still well, but I'll be on the sidelines cheering instead of in the game helping out."
EASTERN WASHINGTON +7 Boise
Eastern will be extra motivated as they play the team that center Matt Nelson transferred to. If Nelson is fired up it won’t matter. He’s not yet eligible. The teams are pretty evenly matched as well.
LOYOLA MARYMOUNT +10 unlv
This is one of the top sharp versus squares games. That means most of the sharp money is going one way and most of the sucker money the other way according to our offshore, Vegas and “outlawâ€Â

10* Pre New Years Bowl Game of the Year on Oregon -3 -112
Oregon should be playing in a BCS bowl. Their only loss came to USC back in September and they will be playing to let the nation know just how worthy of a BCS bid they are. Oklahoma will be without standout offensive strategist Chuck Long who took the San Deigo State job. Their should be some noticeable blunders in play calling out of Kevin Wilson in his first game on the job. Oklahoma's secondary has been their week spot all season and they will get a major test against one of the best passing attacks in the nation. Oklahoma is outmanned and outmathed in this one. Lay the points!
Good Luck All, and long live the Fade Mighty Quinn Club!!!

Holiday Bowl - Qualcomm Stadium - San Diego, CA
Thursday, 12/29/2005 8:00 PM
Oregon (10-1, 7-1 Pacific 10)
vs
Oklahoma (7-4, 6-2 Big 12)
History
This game marks Oklahoma's 39th bowl appearance and its 12th different bowl game. Oklahoma holds a 5-0 series lead over Oregon, including a 31-7 victory in Norman last season. This will be the first appearance in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl for the Sooners and the seventh bowl game in seven seasons for Oklahoma under Bob Stoops. This current streak of seven straight bowl game appearances ranks second in Oklahoma history. The Sooners played in eight straight bowl games from 1975-82. Prior to 1989, Oregon had made only six post-season appearances in the first 93 years of the program’s history. Since then, the school has accumulated 13 bowl invitations in the last 17 seasons and is one of just 11 programs in the country to play in the post-season at least 13 times during that span. This is also the eighth bowl appearance for the Ducks in the last nine seasons. This is Oregon’s second appearance in the Holiday Bowl. The Ducks won 35-30 over Texas in the 2000 Holiday Bowl. Prior to missing the post-season after last year’s 5-6 finish, Oregon had lost two-straight bowl games (31-30 vs. Minnesota, 2003 Sun Bowl; and 38-17 vs. Wake Forest, 2002 Seattle Bowl). Oregon is 4-4 in bowl games under head coach Mike Bellotti.
TRENDS
OKLAHOMA:
Oklahoma is 37-9 SU against bowl teams the last 6 years.
Oklahoma is 7-13-1 ATS against PAC-10 teams, and 0-4 when those teams are off back to back SU wins.
Oklahoma is 9-3 ATS last 12 away games.
Oklahoma is 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS last 6 games this year.
Oklahoma is 2-4 ATS in bowl games since 1999.
OREGON:
Under Head coach Mike Bellotti Oregon is 3-0 SU & ATS against Big XII opposition
Oregon is 4-1 ATS against other bowl teams this season.
CONFERENCE AND BOWL TRENDS
The Favorite in the Holiday Bowl is 0-7 ATS the last 7 years.
PAC-10 teams are 6-1 ATS against Big XII opponents since current Holiday Bowl arrangement began in 1998.
OKLAHOMA
Oklahoma offensive coordinator Chuck Long has left the team to take over as Head Coach at San Diego State. Josh Heupel, who quarterbacked the Sooners to the national championship in the 2000 season (13-2 over Florida State) will replace him.
Oklahoma Leaders:
Rushing: Adrian Peterson (10 G, 197-1,024 yards, 14 TD)
Passing: Rhett Bomar (11 G, 278-150-9-1,789 yards, 9 TD)
Receiving: Malcolm Kelly (10 G, 26-392 yards, 2 TD)
Head Coach: Bob Stoops (Iowa, 1983)
Career Record: 74-16 (7th year)
Record at Oklahoma: 74-16 (7th year)
OREGON
Oregon senior QB Kellen Clemens will not be returning for this contest. Among the 107 players on Oregon’s post-season roster are 49 who consider the state of California home. Of those players, 34 of them are awaiting a Southern California homecoming for the chance to play near where they went to high school. In fact, the last time the Ducks played in front of a Southern California crowd was when they played at UCLA during the 2003 season.
Oregon Leaders:
Rushing: T. Whitehead (10 G, 144-636 yards, 4 TD)
Passing: Kellen Clemens (8 G, 289-185-4-2,406 yards, 19 TD)
Receiving: D. Williams (11 G, 55-1,032 yards, 10 TD)
Head Coach: Mike Bellotti (UC Davis, 1973)
Career Record: 111-66-2 (15th year)
Record at Oregon: 90-41 (10th year)
SERIES NOTES: The Ducks are looking for their first victory against the Sooners as Oklahoma owns the all-time series advantage, 5-0. All of the previous games have taken place on the Sooners’ home turf, most recently in 2004, as the Sooners defeated the Ducks, 31-7. This is the teams’ first meeting in the post-season. The teams won’t have to wait long for a rematch as Oklahoma will make its first ever trip to Eugene on Sept. 16, 2006. The series has been anything but kind to the Northwest partisans as the Sooners have outscored Oregon, 184-17, in the five-game set which began with a 6-0 Oklahoma win in 1958. The home team has dominated the latest three contests, winning 68-3 (1972), 62-7 (1975) and 31-7 (2004).
CONFERENCE NOTES: Oregon’s meeting with Oklahoma will mark only the fifth time it has officially faced a member of that revised conference that began play in 1996, with the Ducks sporting a 2-2 record. However, they have managed to accumulate a record of only 11-24-1 record against the 12 schools that currently comprise the league. Prior to last season’s meeting vs. Oklahoma, Oregon had not faced any of the members making up the revised edition of the conference since 1992 (Texas Tech).
COACHING NOTES: Not only does 11th-year Oregon coach Mike Bellotti resume his role as the longest-tenured football mentor in the league, he stands as one of its most successful. Surpassed only by USC (94-39-1) in overall wins in the Pacific-10 Conference during his Oregon tenure (90-41), he has joined an elite collection of former conference coaches who have won 50 or more league games during their illustrious careers in the Pac-10. He is tied for ninth on the Pac-10’s all-time list of league coaching victories (56-32) and 15th on the league’s career winning percentage list in Pac-10 games (.636). Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops inherited an Oklahoma program five years removed from a winning record - four year from a postseason appearance - and has returned it to national prominence. In Stoops’ seven-year tenure, Oklahoma has won 74 games, spent 71 consecutive weeks in the national rankings, played in six bowl games (four of the BCS variety), including three national championship games, and captured three Big 12 Conference crowns. The son of a coach, Stoops was a four-year starter at Iowa. He began his coaching career in 1983 as a volunteer in the Hawkeye program under Hayden Fry, working through the ranks until he became co-defensive coordinator at Kansas State (1991-95). With the Wildcats, he played a key role in their impressive turnaround. During his final four seasons there, K-State was 35-12 with three bowl appearances. Eventually, he left for Florida (1996-98) and a three-year stint as Steve Spurrier’s defensive coordinator. In 1996, he was part of a national championship team.
GAME NOTES: The 2005 Holiday Bowl game looks chilling similar to last situational tough spot when the Bear of California were snubbed by the BCS despite a higher BSC ranking. Like California last year, Oregon has to be steaming mad after they were left out of the BCS picture despite ending the season as BCS #5 ranked team. Indeed, Oregon finished ahead of NotreDame in the BCS poll, only to settle for this lesser bowl, while the Irish have a date with Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. A year ago, fellow PAC-10 member California, was dealt the same fate, not only winding up in this same bowl, but losing, to boot. Like that 2004 Cal team, this year's Duck squad's only setback has come vs the mighty Trojans of USC.
Analysis
The sixth-ranked University of Oregon football team will square off with the Oklahoma Sooners for the first time in the post-season, but for the second time in as many years. Oregon traveled to Norman in early 2004, falling to the Sooners, 31-7, for the fifth time in as many tries. Oklahoma finished the 2005 regular season with a 7-4 overall record and a 6-2 Big 12 South mark, which tied for second in the division. Oklahoma finished this season ranked No. 23 in the final BCS Standings, while their opponent brings a 10-1 mark into this contest and was No. 5 in the final BCS standings.
With their 10-1 record, Oregon has undergone the programs’ greatest one-season turnaround in 77 years after last years 5-6 disappointing finish. Oregon’s 10-1 was earned against a modest slate of opponents, and their 5-0 road mark was achieved visiting Houston, Stanford, Arizona State, Arizona, and Washington State. They were fortunate to catch several teams on their schedule when they weren’t playing well. One of the reasons for the turnaround has been the Ducks’ explosive offense. This season, Oregon has scored 37 points or more in six of its 11 games and has had over 500 yards or more in total offense four times this season. The team ranks 7th in the country in passing offense, 9th in scoring offense and 16th in total offense. The Duck’s were also third in the Pacific-10 in passing offense at 310.1 yards per game. Defensively, the Ducks’ are lead by First-Team All-Pac-10 Conference standouts Haloti Ngata and Justin Phinisee. Ngata has the opportunity to become one of the program's most decorated individual players in school history. He is an All-America candidate, co-Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, and is a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (nation's outstanding defensive player) and Outland Trophy (nation's best interior lineman). Phinisee finished the season with 56 tackles and four interceptions and led the team with seven passes broken-up.
It should be noted that the Oregon senior starting QB Kellen Clemens was lost for the season with a broken ankle against Arizona and will not return for this game. Replacing Clemens, Oregon has been using a two-quarterback system, with sophomores Dennis Dixon and Brady Leaf, and they have won four consecutive games since Clemens was hurt, including the Arizona game and a 27-20 overtime victory over then-No. 23 California. Combined, the two have completed 92 of 143 passes for 1,001 yards. However, there is clearly some drop off in some peripheral numbers, as the two combined to take nine sacks and throw six interceptions in 143 attempts, while Clemens was sacked only eight times and threw only four interceptions in more than double the amount of attempts. In three appearances in the starting role, sophomore Dennis Dixon has completed 43 of 65 passes (.662) for 540 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. While engineering 24 drives in Oregon’s last three games, he has guided the Ducks to 12 scores (8 TDs, 4 FG, 1 missed FG).
Meanwhile, Oklahoma comes into this contest battle tested as they have faced the NCAA’s toughest schedule. The Sooners opened the season 2-3 before winning five of their final six games to end the season with a 7-4 overall record. The combined record of the four teams Oklahoma lost to is 40-5 and all are ranked. This was also one of the youngest teams in the history of Oklahoma football. Twelve true freshmen drew starting assignments this season and 22 players made their first career start. Sophomore running back Adrian Peterson, who finished second in last year’s Heisman voting, leads the Sooner offense. Peterson missed all or more than half of four games this season with an ankle injury, yet still gained more yards than any other Big 12 running back with 1,024. Over the last four regular season games, when Peterson regained his health, he averaged 156.5 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Rhett Bomar finished the regular season with 1,789 yards passing and nine touchdowns, and also threw nine interceptions. Bomar finished the season 90th in the nation in passing. The Oklahoma defense is led by tackle Dusty Dvoracek, who leads the nation’s interior linemen with 17 tackles for loss and junior linebacker Rufus Alexander, who leads the team with 93 tackles.
What makes this game such an intriguing match-up is the fact that this Oklahoma defense will be the best defensive team that the Ducks will have faced all season. Oklahoma ranked in the Top 10 in pass defense and the only other time that Oregon faced a team with a credible pass defense, the Ducks were held to 13 points. In addition, Oklahoma holds a fundamental match-up advantage when Oregon tries to rush the ball as they were just 69th in rushing offense, having to face the Sooners' 5th ranked rushing defense. To put this in perspective, Oklahoma allows nearly a full yard less per carry than Oregon. They have a huge defensive edge. Oklahoma has the better running attack, the better run and the pass defense, Meanwhile, Oregon will come out firing and will want to show the world that the Ducks deserved a BCS Bowl bid. Oregon will also be playing with revenge looking to avenge their 31-7 loss to Oklahoma at Norman last year. Oklahoma 93rd ranked passing attack will also find trouble moving the ball against an excellent Oregon secondary.
Before betting this game on the favorite, consider the success of the underdog in this bowl over the past 7 years. The underdog has covered the last seven Holiday Bowls, and won three of the last five outright (taking at least +7 in each of those three games). Since this game became Big 12 vs. Pac Ten the underdog has spread coves of 3, 6, 12, 9, 10½, 17½, and 25. The favorite in this bowl often is in a difficult position. Along with the Cotton Bowl, the Holiday Bowl often is one of the bowls that teams shunned by the BCS land in.
Forecast: Oklahoma 28, Oregon 24

Nine of Utah’s 12 all-time bowl appearances have come since 1992. In all, Utah has posted a 7-4 record in 11 bowl appearances. Meanwhile, their opponent Georgia Tech is 22-11 all-time in bowl games.
