    **Tampa Bay at New England**

-- Tampa Bay (9-4 straight up, 7-6 against the spread) won and covered its second straight road game last Sunday by humbling Carolina 20-10 as a 6 ½-point underdog.

-- Keep in mind that this will be the third straight road game for the Bucs, joining Jacksonville and San Francisco as the only teams to face this stretch during the season. The Jaguars went 3-0 both SU and ATS, while the Niners (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) are playing the middle game at St. Louis this week.

-- The Bucs have seen the ‘under’ go 9-4 on the year, including 6-1 on the road.

Tom Brady was fortunate to beat John Gruden and Oakland in the tuck game back in 2001.(Getty Images)

-- The last visit to Foxboro for Jon Gruden came in 2001, when Chucky was roaming the sidelines for the Oakland Raiders. The Silver and Black faithful still remember losing to the Patriots 16-13 in the infamous tuck game.

-- John Gruden’s team holds a 5-2 SU and 4-3 ATS mark away from home this year.

-- At this point, the NFC South is still up for grabs. T-Bay holds the tiebreaker over Carolina at this point with division record, but a loss on Saturday would hand the edge back to the Panthers. The Falcons play both Carolina and Tampa to close the season, making every game more important as the next.

-- New England (8-5 SU, 6-7 ATS) moved another step closer to winning the AFC East after demolishing Buffalo 35-7 last Sunday as a four-point road favorite.

-- Bill Belichik’s club will clinch the division with one victory or one Miami Dolphins’ loss. After this contest, the Pats meet the N.Y. Jets on Monday Night Football before a home finale against the Dolphins.

-- The Patriots have been shaky at Gillette Stadium, going 4-2 SU, but only 2-4 ATS. The ‘over/under’ is all square at 3-3.

-- Quarterback Tom Brady (shoulder) was banged up last week and is listed as “questionableâ€Â

    TIP OF THE DAY

    Sport: National Football League

Game: Kansas City Chiefs @ New York Giants on Dec 17 2005 5:00PM

    Prediction: New York Giants

    Current Line: -3 105

    Over/Under: 46 -110

Reason: If you love offense, then be sure to tune into this AFC versus

NFC clash between the Chiefs and Giants. Kansas City comes into this

game averaging 25.3 points and 380.9 yards per game while New York is

good for an average of 26.5 points and 357.5 yards per game.

If you look at just the set alone, you would notice that the G-Men get

all of the favorable arrows. Kansas City enters this game off a road war

at Dallas while New York runs in its last home game off a division road

win at Philadelphia. Both the Chiefs and Giants are positioning

themselves for post season play and neither can afford a loss. Kaycee

has a home date with San Diego on deck and New York must travel to D.C.

to take on the Redskins. Those two games next week are going to be

battles and that makes this non-division affair extremely important.

Last road game sets havenâ?Tt been too kind to Kansas City. The Chiefs

have posted a dismal 3-10 SU and 4-9 ATS record in their last 13 tries

including a most recent trend of 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS over the last six

years. To make matters worse, Kansas City grows tired in the second of

two or more away notching a soft 4-11 SU and 6-9 ATS record.

Itâ?Ts not hard to like the Giants here. With Eli Manning behind center,

the G-Men have been solid in the Big Apple posting a sweet 8-2 SU and

ATS record in its last 10 games. In last home game sets, New York has

been money notching a stellar 13-7 SU and 14-6 ATS record.

Those two team trends are certainly noteworthy. However, these next two

beauties make this play. First, at home off a road game, the Giants are

a powerful 28-15 SU and 28-16-1 ATS. Finally, at home versus opponents

that carry a won/loss percentage greater than .600, the Boys from the

Big Apple are a sizzling 34-23-2 ATS including 21-8-2 ATS in that role

coming off a SU win. Total players take note: The under in that last set

    carries a 22-8-1 ATS record!

New York and Kansas City both need this victory to help their playoff

future. The Giants get the advantage of playing this contest in their

own backyard and in weather that suits them just fine. In what should be

a an offensive shootout, side with the home team. Take NEW YORK.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS +4.5 vs. new england patriots:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense is beginning to look like a Super Bowl defense. In their last three(3) games Tampa Bay's defense has given up only 26 points which is an average of just 8.66 points per game. This is a MONSTER game for Tampa Bay. The Bucceneers know the Carolina Panthers play the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, so for Tampa Bay to have any chance of remaining in first place in the NFC South they know they must go on the road and win this game. *PACIFIC over FRESNO STATE by 24

It may have taken him a little while longer than expected, but Pacific coach Bob Thomason

finally has his Tigers pointed in the right direction. Given the fact that Pacific started 2005-

06 without five of last year’s top scorers and Big West Player of the Year, David Doubley,

it’s to Thomason’s credit that they’ve won six of their first nine games. The Tigers beat the

Bulldogs at Fresno State last year, 88-77, while shooting 49.2% from the field. They are

shooting 50.9% at home this year and shot 52% in their own building last year. Pretty consistent,

    huh? PACIFIC, 86-62.

    BEST BET

    MEMPHIS over *MISSISSIPPI by 23

Sure, it’s a lot of points to be giving an SEC home dog, but what a dog this is. The Rebels

have played next to no one, unless you think New Mexico or Louisiana Monroe are Final

Four threats, while John Calipari’s Tigers have already taken on Duke (lost by a trey), UCLA

(won by eight), Alabama on the road (won by 11) and at Cincinnati (won by 10). The Tigers

are deep, fast, tough inside and have a point guard in Darius Washington who runs the

show with aplomb and can take the game over when required. Without a look ahead in

sight, look for Memphis to keep on waltzing. MEMPHIS, 93-70.

    BEST BET

*SAN ANTONIO over SACRAMENTO by 20

In the world champions’, 96-93, win in Arco Arena, they held a good shooting team to

39% in its own building. Not a good sign for the poor traveling Blings who are giving up

105 PPG on the road as opponents fire away at a success rate of 47.6% overall and 36%

from downtown. And, that’s why Sacramento has only one road win and is being out

scored by 10 PPG. San Antonio was 2-0 SU and ATS at home a year ago vs. the Blings

winning by 13 PPG while holding them to 82.5 PPG. SAN ANTONIO, 105-85

    ***BEST BET

Texas* over Tennessee by 30“If we're down eight or 10, we realize we're a couple of steals away. With the pressure we

put on, we're going get on a run.'' Those are the words of Tennessee junior Dane

Bradshaw, full of bravado after starting new head coach Bruce Pearl’s first season 5-0, all

on Tennessee’s home floor. Yet Tennessee blew a 21-point lead against (still winless)

Louisiana-Lafayette and had to scramble to recover. It trailed Murray State of the Ohio

Valley Conference by nine in the second half and Appalachian State of the Southern

Conference by 12 in the first half. Now, Tennessee will not have played for 11 days. And

when they get down eight or 10 points at Texas, they ain’t puttin’ on no pressure, ain’t

gettin’ no steals, ain’t goin’ on no run. TEXAS, 80-50.

    ***BEST BET

Old Dominion* over DePaul by 16

The Colonial Athletic Association is not shy about wanting to get two teams into the Big

Dance in March. A home-floor win vs. a Big East team may not mean much come

March…but then again, perhaps it will! DePaul went to the free-throw line 20 times in

the second half of last season’s 70-63 home win over ODU, who got to the line 18 times

the entire game. It was 30-29 at halftime and ODU knows that it took way too many

3-pointers (29) in a game where normally double-double center Alex Loughton was just

1-for-6 from the field. ODU packs them into its 9,300-seat arena and this is another

affair that helps ODU head coach Blaine Taylor get one of those Jesus-like holograms of

himself commissioned for his office wall. DePaul’s Jerry Wainwright got a road win at

Dayton last weekend but he was well-versed in the ways of that opponent after coaching

at Richmond for two seasons. He is further removed from his CAA days. OLD

    DOMINION, 75-59.

    **PREFERRED

Iowa* over Arizona State by 13

This may be the one and only play you’ll see here on the Alfords of Iowa, whose role

today has been deadly to their supporters: 21-40 ATS since the 2000-01 season as home

favorite. But Arizona State comes out of their Tempe, AZ hiding place -- where they were

hoping that future opponents wouldn’t realize that Ike Diogu is no longer there -- for the

first time this season after already losing to another Big Ten team – injured Minnesota.

So it could be time for the Hawkeyes to play against type and out-fundamental the slopmeister

    visitors. IOWA, 70-57.

    **PREFERRED

Oregon State* over Georgia by 16

OSU head coach Jay John seems to use most of the non-conference road games as exhibitions,

at least you hope he is because OSU’s play is sometimes as bad as it gets by a

power-conference team. Throw the name-brand Georgia at him on his home floor and

he figures to have the group tighter than usual, especially since they lost turnovers 20-15

in last season’s OT loss, which was played at Atlanta. For one home game against a soso

non-conference foe that will play three or more guards for most of the game, with nine

of Georgia’s 10 leading minutes-getters freshmen and sophomores, they can probably get

    by. OREGON STATE, 76-60.

    **PREFERRED

Youngstown State* over Duquesne by 11

The YSU Penguins had something on their minds other than hoops when they shot 29%

from the field on New Year’s Eve in a 78-54 loss at Duquesne last season. But they made

it to the free-throw line 23 times and only turned it over 10 times, something to build on

for the re-hook against an opponent with only one double-figure scorer and roster that

carries a bag o’ bricks to most of its road games. YOUNGSTOWN STATE, 72-61.

    Memphis over MISSISSIPPI by 21

Something has to be wrong with a team (Ole Miss) that loses

by 53 to New Mexico. Memphis is itching to get even for that

12-point home loss last year (laid 15 in that game) to Ole Miss.

Cats 54-4-1 ATS last 59 SU revenge wins. Look for the series

visitor to move to 3-0 SUATS here today in the blowout.

    UTAH over Arizona by 6

The Utes have only lost once in their last 36 home games and

are a sterling 22-8 ATS in their last 30 revenge games here. On

the flip side Arizona 2-22 ATS in their last 24 SU losses to

avenging teams. With revenge ready to rears it head on this

strong homecourt, this is something Ute better do!
