St Louis at Ole Miss (-3.5, play to -4.5) - 5:00pm Pacific - Game #517-518
This is a key game for the Rebels. This marks the start of a long home stand and there is pressure on head coach Rod Barnes to win this year. Ole Miss is looking to rebound off a tough road loss at Illinois-Chicago on Saturday. They led the game by 12 with 7 minutes to play before losing in overtime. The team practiced twice on Monday in preparation for this game. Ole Miss has been lacking SEC caliber talent in recent years but two new transfers have helped fill the void. Center Dwayne Curtis, a transfer from Auburn, leads the team in scoring and rebounding and has gone for 17.3ppg & 9.0rpg in last four outings. Shooting guard Clarence Sanders, ranked as one of the top JC guards in the nation, got off to a slow start missing the first two games of the season but is starting to come on and has played starters minutes off the bench in last two games scoring 16.5ppg in the process. Returnees Todd Abernethy, Bam Doyne, Londrick Nolen, and Brandon Patterson all saw extensive playing time a year ago.
St Louis will be concluding a very difficult stretch of six games in 14 days. This will be their third straight road game in a seven day span. They have been in St Louis only two full days of the last 12. Complicating matters is that they start final exams on Wednesday. Needless to say this is a tough spot for them. St Louis is a young team, relying heavily on two true freshman. They have struggled on the road in recent years and they have below average depth. The Billikens are susceptible to strong low post play so Ole Miss leading scorer Curtis should find success in the paint.
Ole Miss has definitely improved their talent level and is off to a decent start at 4-2. They played well in the loss to Illinois Chicago and should have won that game which is a good sign considering it was on the road. This is a key home game for them as they badly want to build confidence and fan support before taking on Memphis Saturday. Catching SLU at the end of a difficult stretch may be just what the Doctor ordered. Give the points.

UL-Lafayette at Louisiana Tech (-4, play to -5) - 6:00pm Pacific - Game #521-522
The Bulldogs started the season playing seven of their first eight games away from home and the stretch ended at instate rival Southern, a team they had played and beaten a week earlier, which made for a good possibility of a bad performance and they gave just that in a 16 point loss. The team has still accomplished a lot this season. They lost by 3 at Nebraska in a game that came down to the final possession, lost by 10 at Alabama in a game that was close until late in the game, won by 12 at New Orleans (picked just behind Lafayette in the Sun Belt), and won at Texas Tech by 15. Junior power forward Paul Millsap (19.5ppg/11.5rpg) is one of the best in the country at the position. Senior Daevon Haskins (5.0 assists per game) is the consummate point guard. Guard Corey Dean, another senior, is a proven scorer. Junior college all-American Jerome Richardson had added a much needed additional playmaker on the wing. Two other JC transfers, forward Harry Disy, and guard Trey McDowell have made solid contributions out of the gate. Junior guard Marcus Elliot has returned after sitting out last year and has started the last two games averaging 10.5ppg.
The Ragin Cajuns will be playing their fifth road game out of six to start the season. They are coming off a big overtime win on Sunday at UTEP, but I discount the win because the Miners played without leading scorer Jason Williams who broke the jaw of a teammate in a fight during practice. Prior to that win, Lafayette had been 0-4. This is a team that is trying to replace three key starters (two of which are playing professionally) that led them to the NCAA tournament last year. They have filled the void in part with a JC transfer guard and center Michael Southall who has not played in two seasons due to off the court issues. Southall and fellow starter Ed Turner were suspended two games ago for violating team rules but returned vs UTEP. Chemistry may be an issue for this team in the early going and there is chance for letdown after the big OT win last time out. ULL really suffers a drop off in talent from their starting five to the bench. Four reserves accounted for just 6 points on 2-of-10 shooting in a combined 48 minutes vs UTEP.
I like the make-up of this year's Louisiana Tech team. They had good talent last year but never seemed able to get over the hump. This year they have much better perimeter play, including better outside shooting, which means opposing defenses cannot just sag in on Millsap inside. The Bulldogs have won 6 straight in this series at home and should make it 7 straight tonight. Give the points.
