RANDALL THE HANDLE: San Diego @ Washington
Chargers have won four of five Bills while the Redskins have dropped three of their past four but things in this league are never that simple. San Diego could be without the catalyst of their passing game as TE Antonio Gates is trying to shake off a foot injury incurred last Sunday. The Bolts have the league's best runner but Washington is strong in that department. San Diego made this trip three weeks ago and nearly lost to the Jets.
TAKE: Washington +3 +1.00 (Risking 1.5 units)
Carolina @ Buffalo
Unlike when on the road, the Bills resemble a competitive team when playing at home. That inspires us to take the generous points being offered by a Panthers squad that showed plenty of vulnerability in loss to Bears last week. The Bills have a limited offence but they should be able to stay close, as Buffalo's weakness has been stopping the run and Carolina averaging just 88 yards per game on the ground.
TAKE: Buffalo +3½ -1.06 (Risking 1.59 units to win 1.5)
San Francisco @ Tennessee
We are quickly learning that oddsmakers can't set the line high enough when it comes to poor teams traveling. The Niners certainly qualify, as they have been a putrid 0-5 on the road with average loss being by 25 points. The Titans are far from elite but many of Tennessee's wounded returned last week, which resulted in a respectable outing against the Jaguars. The timing and the opponent bode well for the host. TAKE: Tennessee –9 +1.03 (Risking 1.5 units).
New England @ Kansas City
The Patriots have been underdogs just three times this season but that has been against the AFC's elite (Colts, Broncos and Steelers). The Chiefs don't belong in that group and we're pleased to take points here with a New England offense that should shred KC's susceptible defense. TAKE: New England +3 (No bets).
Baltimore @ Cincinnati
Once again the Bengals failed to take the step up in class after falling to the Colts last week. After failing its other test to the Steelers, Cincinnati followed up with a lethargic win over the visiting Packers. A similar emotional state against good Ravens defense should result in fairly close contest.TAKE: Baltimore +9 (No bets).
Chicago @ Tampa Bay
Bears continue to win with defense but now they must face a team that also plays good defense and can put a few points on the board. Tampa goes on the road for next three games so this one becomes a key focus if they want to take their tight division.
TAKE: Tampa Bay –3 (No bets).
Cleveland @ Minnesota
Although the Vikings have won four of their past five, prefer diligent Browns taking back a few points rather than spotting some with erratic hosts. Cleveland's unheralded defense is allowing a mere 17 points per game, ranking them 6th overall in that department.
TAKE: Cleveland +4 (No bets).
St. Louis @ Houston
Pick your poison. The Rams have mailed it in while the Texans don't even have postage. No matter what the outcome, it is impossible to be laying points on the road with this St. Louis group. The Rams have covered just three of past 16 as a road favorite. TAKE: Houston +3 ½ (No bets).
Jacksonville @ Arizona
This could be a tall order for the visiting Jaguars as they tend to play to opponents' level and will be favored on the road for second consecutive week. The Cards have been profitable as a home underdog and perhaps they can build on a rare road win in St. Louis last Sunday. TAKE: Arizona +3 ½ (No bets).
Miami @ Oakland
The Dolphins passed for 55 yards last week. Now they must take that same putrid offence on the road for back end of consecutive trips and attempt to stay close to a Raiders team that has scoring capabilities. In addition, the Fish will be without defensive leader Zach Thomas.
TAKE: Oakland –7 (No bets).
NY Giants @ Seattle
The Giants are much more attractive in an underdog role as they are capable of defeating almost anyone if the stars align properly. The Seahawks are coasting in their division and could get caught napping as they look ahead to feature game next Monday in Philadelphia.
TAKE: NY Giants +4 ½ (No bets).
Green Bay @ Philadelphia
We wouldn't back this Packers team with money found on the street. They have no running back, an over-the-hill quarterback and a lame-brained coach. The Eagles have had a miserable year but even with a depleted lineup, this price appears to be cheap. TAKE: Philadelphia -4 ½ (No bets).
New Orleans @ NY Jets
Who scheduled this one for a Sunday night? The Grinch? The Jets are fielding a team of backups and the results are obvious, as they have managed to combine for just three points the past two weeks. The Saints are horrendous and sloppy but at least have a few bona fide players at the skill positions. TAKE: New Orleans -1 ½ (No bets).
Pittsburgh @ Indianapolis
QB Ben Roethlisberger is expected back for Pittsburgh but Big Ben excels against the Twinkie teams and the Colts are anything but. If the Steelers fall behind, which is likely, they will be forced to abandon their signature power-run style and their 26th ranked passing game cannot play catch up. TAKE: Indianapolis –8 (No bets).
