Memphis has won both games since wide receiver Maurice Avery took over at quarterback in place of 3rd string QB Billy Bairfield, who was ineffective in 2 starts after the Tigers’ backup Will Hudgens joined original starter Patrick Byrne on the season ending injury list. Avery is more of a runner than a passer, as he’s gained 162 yards on 34 rushing plays in two starts at quarterback, but Avery has also averaged an efficient 8.2 yards per pass play (against teams that would allow 6.2 yppp to an average quarterback) on 27 pass plays in those two games as teams put an extra man or two towards the line of scrimmage to help contain the nation’s leading rusher DeAngelo Williams (1309 yards at 6.7 ypr). Williams has averaged a bit less than normal (5.9 ypr) in those two games with Avery at quarterback, but the Tigers’ offense has been better overall than it has been for the season – averaging 6.2 yards per play in their last 2 games against teams that would allow a combined 5.8 yppl to an average team. UAB doesn’t defend the run well (4.6 yards per rushing play allowed to Division 1A teams that would average only 4.1 yprp against an average defense) and they don’t defend the pass well either (5.9 yppp allowed to Division 1A teams that would average only 5.1 yppp against an average defense), so the Tigers’ attack should work well in this game. UAB’s offense is good (6.5 yppl against teams that would allow 5.7 yppl to an average attack) because quarterback Darrell Hackney is very good, averaging 8.1 yppp in 6 games against Division 1A teams that would allow 6.6 yppp to an average quarterback, and the Blazers should also move the ball well against a Memphis defense that has surrendered 6.0 yppl (to teams that would average 5.4 yppl against an average defense) and has particular problems defending the pass (7.7 yppp allowed to teams that would average 6.2 yppp against an average defense). My math model calls for UAB to have 55 more total yards in this game, but the run-oriented Memphis attack is projected to turn the ball over less and the Tigers have a 5.9 points edge in special teams and are at home. Overall, the math favors Memphis by 5 ½ points and the Tigers apply to a 30-6-2 ATS subset of a 173-83-7 ATS contrary indicator that is based on their poor 2-4 ATS record. However, UAB is a perfect 11-0 ATS lifetime (all under current coach Watson Brown) as an underdog in conference play following a straight up loss. The general situation favoring Memphis is worth 1 ½ points more than the team trend favoring UAB, so I’ll call for a 7 point Tigers’ victory and will lean with the Over as well.

Tigers host rival Blazers Tuesday
Memphis Tigers can widen the gap between themselves and UAB in the USA Tuesday with a win over the Blazers.
The Tigers look to avenge an earlier 35-28 loss at the hands of the Blazers.
The Blazers come in as a slight 2-point road underdog and look to improve on their 3-3 ATS Mark. The Tigers, 2-4 ATS, will try to cover the 2 points at home.
After losing last week, Watson Brown's team looks to bounce back with a solid showing on the road Tuesday in Memphis. They were 2.5 point favorites in that game.
Tommy West's troops were at home against the Pirates last game and came away with a 27-24 win. Oddsmakers had them as 8.5-point favorites in that game.
Memphis brings one of the league's best running games into this contest. They are averaging 282.9 yards per game and boast the #2 running game.
