    GOLDSHEET

    11 SAN FRANCISCO over Arizona

    Late Score Forecast:

    SAN FRANCISCO 28 - Arizona 20

(Sunday, Oct. 2 at Mexico City)

In first regular-season NFL game outside the U.S., will gladly side with

underdog S.F., which already owns a victory over St. Louis and nearly beat

improved Dallas last weekend. Yes, Arizona wants revenge for a pair of

galling 31-28 OT losses to the 49ers LY (the only victories in S.F.'s

injury-filled "Rebuilding Year" after the trade of Terrell Owens). Looking

at the two teams, it's easy to see that one (the Niners) is full of new life

and positive chemistry, and the other (Arizona) is slipping into its old

nasty habits (weak ground game, falling behind early, making big gaffs at key

junctures). Scouts report S.F.'s now-healthy defenders love new HC Nolan's

aggressive 3-4 defensive schemes. And offense has gotten a big boost from

the return of QB Tim Rattay to the starting lineup and the emergence of

Brandon Lloyd and former ND QB Arnaz Battle as bona fide NFL WRs.

    10 NOTRE DAME over *Purdue

    Late Score Forecast:

    NOTRE DAME 30 - *Purdue 21

Notre Dame bounced back sharply from disappointing OT loss vs. Michigan State

to post its third straight strong road effort under new HC Charlie Weis. The

Irish have won and covered at Pitt, Michigan and Washington, and they'll be

facing an underachieving Purdue contingent that's yet to cover a game. The

Boilermaker problems are largely due to a pass defense that's yielded 307

ypg. This is a situation that Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn is well-suited to

take advantage of. Quinn has thrown for 295 ypg and 10 scores, completing

62% of his passes with only 2 ints. This is a marked improvement in his

numbers from last year, and Quinn has had particular success going to 6-5 jr.

WR Jeff Samardzija (21 recs., 6 TDs, 17 ypc) and TE Anthony Fasano (21

recs.), but he's spread the ball around well. ND returned the top 7 pass

catchers from a year ago, and they have all contributed to a quick turnaround

at South Bend. Irish confident & prepared thanks to Weis.

    10 NAVY over *Duke

    Late Score Forecast:

    NAVY 35 - *Duke 17

This is Navy's first game in 3 weeks. But scouts say well-organized HC Paul

Johnson has been making good use of that extended time off. And his

money-making Middies (18-6-1 vs. spread last 25 on board!) are hungry for

their first win of campaign after a pair of 3-point losses to Maryland &

Stanford. ACC scouts urge us to lay fair price against Duke. Befuddled Blue

Devil offense has pretty much picked up where it left off in 2004, when it

staggered to a nation's-worst 266 ypg. Duke tried 3 different QBs in the

first quarter of last week's 38-7 loss at Virginia, and true frosh Zack Asack

looks like the new No. 1. Greatly prefer more-cohesive Navy attack.

Tough-minded sr. QB Lamar Owens has given offense a more significant aerial

threat. And Mids' relentless ground game (290 ypg in 2004) will eventually

break the resolve of the Devils' defense, just like it did last season when

Navy racked up 301 yards rushing in its 27-12 win over Duke.

    10 *PENN STATE over Minnesota

    Late Score Forecast:

    *PENN STATE 24 - Minnesota 16

Long-time Big Ten scouts rather surprised that Penn State is any kind of home

dog, considering that the resurgent, 4-0 Nittany Lions-who won just 7 games

combined previous 2 years-have their swagger back following impressive 34-29

comeback victory (trailed by 16 in 2nd Q!) at Northwestern. Penn State's

maturing, mobile 6-2 sr. QB M. Robinson (9 TDP), who is doing a superb job

spreading ball around to a young, talented WR corps, should continue to

thrive vs. a still ? Minny 2ndary (allowing 245 ypg passing) that gave up

several big aerial plays in 42-35 OT win vs. Purdue. And Gophers certainly

can't afford to blitz with Nittany Lions slashing 6-2, 220 jr. RB T. Hunt

(361 YR, 7.4 ypc!) commanding every-down attention. Have full respect for

Minny's nation-leading RB Maroney (698 YR), but don't see him exploding vs.

quick, fired-up Penn State front 7 (just 2 ypc), anchored by head-hunting

6-2, 230 jr. LB Posluszny (22 tackles vs. NW!). Also, look for Gopher QB

Cupito to repeatedly misfire vs. a veteran, tight-covering State 2ndary (only

9 TDP last 15 games!). Quadruple revenge works for upbeat Nittany Lion squad

that's hell-bent to start 5-0 with Ohio State & Michigan on tap.

    10 *IOWA over Illinois

    Late Score Forecast:

    *IOWA 38 -Illinois 10

The enormity of the embarrassment of last week's 31-6 humiliation at Ohio

State (Buckeyes won 31-6, out-rushed Hawkeyes 314 to -9) ensures the maximum

effort this week from prideful Iowa. Few teams have as much chemistry as the

Hawkeyes, and HC Kirk Ferentz has turned Iowa City into a virtual fortress

vs. visitors, covering 25 of last 29 at home! That trend wouldn't matter

much if Iowa didn't have the guns, and the Hawkeyes do, with the superior QB

in Drew Tate, better kicker in Kyle Schlicher (52-yarder in Columbus), and

the superior defense (Illinois has given up 30 or more to all foes save San

Jose). Lastly, Ferentz considers Illinois a crucial recruiting ground

(because there just aren't enough high schools in Iowa) in order to have a

chance to stay up with the "big boys" (Michigan & Ohio State) in the Big Ten,

and he can't let new Illini coach Ron Zook make many inroads.

TOTALS: OVER (47) in San Diego-New England game-Charger offense back on track

with the return of TE Gates making things easier for all; Pats defense

getting very thin in back seven...OVER (46.5) in St. Louis-N.Y. Giants

game-Eli is arriving-fast-and the artificial turf installed LY in N.Y. helps

    promote the speed game.

HONORABLE MENTION (Nine-Rated Games): WYOMING (-17) vs. Unlv-Cowboys have

covered nine straight (!), while UNLV has added QB questions to its defensive

concerns...SOUTH FLORIDA (+21) at Miami-Florida-USF's victory over Louisville

an indication of how much Bulls' skill people have improved; Miami got the

cover last week vs. Colorado, but offense in a state of transition...UAB

(-18.5) vs. Rice-Owls' option will do some damage to Blazer defense, but Rice

defense has barely slowed balanced attacks TY.

    ..NEW ORLEANS vs. Buffalo (at

San Antonio)-"Home" debut for Saints in Alamodome, which is expected to be

packed; Bills' QB Losman learning the ropes as an NFL starter...ATLANTA (-6)

vs. Minnesota-Falcons defensive pressure likely to squeeze more turnovers out

of Vikings; game would be rated higher if Vick's hamstring were healed.
